2nd Vet Opinion on Willi

Took Willi to get a 2nd opinion on his bone cancer diagnosis. The place I went
specializes in extreme vet medical care and requires a referral to get
appointments and do not provide routine pet care. Their vets are board
certified in different areas of speciality - the one I saw in Small Animal
Internal Medicine and has treated many cases of cancer. Have been told they are
among the best in Virginia for veterinary medicine and surgical care. Just a
wonderful bedside manner and articulated to me well some options for Willi.
They have given me some optimism. Willi's x-rays show the cancer has not spread
and the boney mass is movable, which may allow for clean removal. However,
their caution is some masses will be more firmly associated with the tissue
inside creating perhaps more complications and possibly leaving cells that may
lead to regrowth of the cancer. They don't know until they get in there. But
there is some chance they can help Willi and I need to do it.

Willi will go into surgery next Tuesday or Thursday - the vet determined it was
best to move soon. Unfortunately complicating things is I will be visiting my
elderly father in France for 10 days and will have to call in to determine's
Willi's status. He will remain hospitalized until I return. They say limiting
his movement will be important.

Again, thanks for everyone's support and encouraging me to get a 2nd opinion.
Getting a 2nd opinion was huge for me and frankly allowed me to identify a more
skilled practice to see if Willi can be helped.

Not sure if I will have access to this newsgroup while in France but look
forward to providing an update on Willi in the near future.

Best wishes to Willi for a successful surgery and rapid and complete
recovery.  Also, for you to have a safe trip and a good visit with your
father.

No matter what happens now, you know that you did absolutely everything you
could. Good luck to you and Willi.

I know I won't be popular for saying this. If it was me. I know I could not
go on a vaction knowing that one of my kids was in the hospital. Am I alone
in thinking that maybe the OP should visit his/her father after the cat gets
out of the hospital?

I think that Magnus wishes the timing had been different but I certainly agree
with his decision.  My cats pretty much mean the world to me, and most
especially, my now-deceased cat, Cory.  There were many times when I put him
and the rest of them before people but I think when it's your parents and
they're elderly that, even if you don't want to, you should put them (the
parents) first.  I have an elderly mom now and I know that I have to consider
her first should it be a choice between her and the cats.  It would be one
thing if he was just driving a couple of hours to see his father but a trip to
France is a big deal that has probably been planned for awhile.  It would be
costly to reschedule it and his father would probably be very hurt.  The cat
will be safe at the vet.  I think he's doing the right thing for everyone.  I
just feel bad that he may not be able to have as good a time with his father as
he might have if Willi were not ill.  Once your parents get elderly, there
aren't that many more memories to be made so you want the remaining time to be
as good as possible.

I know for me that if it were Isis or Jade in the hospital, I'd reschedule
and trip I had to make. What if the cat was in the hospital and took a turn
for the worse? Elderly or not you know you would have a little more time
with the parent than you would the child if they were dying first. I know
mine is the dissenting opionion here but I'd reschedule the trip.

My father is 75 and elderly. I see him once every 1-2 years - have to
prioritize a parent over Willi. My ability to reschedule is unfortunately not
feasible given my current occupation and job and this is a visit my frail
father has anticipated for months. He is unable to travel to the States anymore
due to his health. You point out already what I have agonized about. I am very
comforted by the facility in which he will be in and my mother - who is close
to Willi - who will be there to ensure Willi's smooth drop off at the vet and
be a source of communication as well as another close friend I trust. I love my
cat Willi but must put my father first in this instance.

Go visit your dad with a clear conscience. You're doing the best you can for
both your kitty and your father.

Great to hear, and I think it is the very best thing for Willi
to be in the hospital while you are on vacation. They will  be more
effective at limiting his movement. It is all for the best, because you
could do nothing but worry over him. I really hope you come home to a healed
kitty with an excellent prognosis. Bless you for your dedication to Willi.
Many others would just put him down due to the cost.

My prayers go out to Willi.
