Another story with a happy ending. I'm in the mood for happy today.
Though this lady needs some effing common sense...

Cat loses two of his nine lives within days

May 20 2004

By David Powell Daily Post

JOE the cat survived a four-mile journey on a car roof - only to be
savaged by a pit bull terrier days later.

The black and white moggy was asleep on owner Adria Bryan's Ford Escort
last Monday evening when his amazing adventure began.

Staff nurse Adria failed to notice him and unwittingly drove at up to
60mph from her home in Holland Park Drive, Rhyl, towards Ysbyty Glan
Clwyd in Bodelwyddan, where she was due to start a night shift.

Adria said: "I went up to the Sainsbury's roundabout, over the new
bridge and on. I must have gone up to the national speed limit of 60mph.
I even passed a police car with a cat on my roof and he didn't flash his
lights at me.

"I realised something was wrong when other people flashed their lights.
I thought I may have left my handbag on the roof but it was on the seat
next to me so I carried on."

Eventually, a gobsmacked motorist raised the alarm.

Adria, who has three other rescued cats, said: "One lad overtook me and
I thought he was going to cut in front. Then he leaned across looking
shocked and pointed at my roof."

Halfway to work, she stopped in Rhuddlan and, to her amazement, the
incredible truth dawned.

She said: "I must admit as I stopped the car, I did think 'Please don't
let it be Joe'. He's the only one of our cats dozy enough to have stayed
on the roof. He's a very heavy sleeper and must have woken up with the
movement of the car.

"One of the others might have jumped off but he wouldn't have known what
to do. He probably clung on for dear life with his claws to the groove
at the top of the rear door."

Adria put Joe inside the car and drove straight back home where the cool
cat strolled straight to his bowl for some food.

Joe was taken in seven years ago as an emaciated, stray cat and promptly
named after the 1990s rock band Ugly Kid Joe. He is at least 14 years
old. He is partially blind, possibly through malnutrition when younger,
and can only see upwards.

Five years ago, he collided with a car and broke his pelvis.

Joe still managed to drag himself indoors and up the stairs before
collapsing and spending three weeks in his basket.

Joe's lucky escape last week was nearly followed by tragedy at the
weekend.

The cat suffered three cracked ribs and a punctured lung during the dog
attack as he slept on the front doorstep on Sunday lunchtime.

A neighbour spotted a dog owner bundling the Staffordshire bull terrier
into a car and driving off.

A vet gave Joe painkillers and yesterday he was remarkably agile despite
his injuries.

Adria was told the dog had picked up Joe by the back and shaken him.

She added: "It's unbelievable that he's got through this week but he's
come through it all. I'm determined he'll get better, bless him.

"I reckon he's only got about twoand-a-half lives left. I've had a hell
of a week being teased at work."

The Bryans have contacted the police to investigate whether action can
be taken against the dog owner.

Their modern, semi-detached house near Ysgol Llywelyn has several feline
ornaments, a draught-excluder decorated with a cat pattern and there are
cat flaps in every door.

Wonderful reasons why you should keep your cats inside or in a safe enclosed
area. Poor kitty.

Yeah, why do so many people let their cats roam outdoors? They're bound
to get into trouble, cause damage, be catnapped, killed by a car,
tortured by some sick depraved person, get into fights with other cats,
and so on...

Keep them inside where it's safe. My kitty is over two years old and
still beautiful and intact because he's never been subjected to the
cruel world outside.

Yep. I would feel like my heart was walking around outside totally at the
mercy of everything.

Oh please.... My kitties are also two years old, quite beautiful and
intact and have indoor/outdoor access during the day. There's about 10
outdoor cats on this block alone and they're all fine. I see them
everyday.

Of course things can happen and areas vary in their relative safety,
but really the majority of cats in a safe area do fine. I've never
seen such big worriers in my life as the people in this group.

Well, no. Wonderful reasons why you should make sure your cat isn't on
top of your car before driving away. Wonderful reasons why dog owners
should be forced to keep their animals under control.

I can just see a story in the papers, 'pedestrians waiting for bus
mown down by speeding car'. 'All the more reasons why people should
stay indoors', says Mary.
