I have a two year old cat and she has been crapping in my bathroom for
the last few days. I found a delightful pile in my shower on the
weekend, but I'm not entirely sure if that was from the neighbours cat
or not as it looked very different from the presents left on the
bathroom floor in the past couple of days. I'm wondering whether it is
in retaliation or an attention seeking behaviour as she did it right
in front of me on the bath mat while I was in the shower about half an
hour ago. And she looked right at me while she was doing it.. WTF!!
I think she may be having territorial wars with the other cats in the
neighbourhood as I think they have been randomly spraying, how do I
stop this behaviour short of locking her outside? She does not have a
litter box as she normally goes outside.

A litter box inside and keeping other cats out is the answer.
She needs a safe place. Give her one. Keep her in.

When a cat defecates outside of its box, and does it right in front of
its human companion, it's likely that cat is rather unhappy with you for
some reason. What that reason might be, I can't say because I don't live
with either of you. My uneducated guess would be stress of some sort.
Years ago, when my (now ex-)wife and I moved to a new domicile, our cat
Ari started defecating in very unpleasant places--on the stairs, in the
middle of the living room, on the pillows on our bed. Often he'd make it
a point to do it right in front of us. We took him to the vet for a
possible urinary tract infection. The vet gave him a clean bill of
health, then explained cats do this when they're mad with their
owner(s). In Ari's case, he surmised that, being put in a different
house, he was upset over being displaced, with nowhere in the new home
that was particularly his. He suggested shutting Ari in the spare
bedroom at night with food, water, litter and a night light. We did
that, and in less than a week, problem solved. Ari naturally went there
at night and at other times when he wanted his space, and the
inappropriate defecating stopped.
Take your cat to the vet for a check-up; illness and parasites are known
stressors. It also might be that the territorial battles you mentioned
are having that effect. Talk it over with the vet about it.

I'm thinking it was definitely the territorial battles that was the
prob, I found several areas of the house that had been sprayed this
afternoon and since I've cleaned them up, she's stopped acting like
she's on E. I've kept her inside for the past couple of nights too,
and although she is still sitting guard by the door, it's in more of a
casual 'I'm a 9 - 5 security guard' kind of way than a 'I'm going to
kill anything that moves" kind of way. It was a complete personality
change, very disconcerting but hopefully she's not going to be too
traumatized from the experience.. Might take her to the vets on the
weekend just to check as well, you never know. Thanks for the
advice :)

Why is the neighbor's cat in your house?

Your cat is probably terrorized. Since you haven't provided her with a
litter box, where is she supposed to go to the bathroom? Where would you go
to the bathroom if someone refused to provide you with a toilet?
>as I think they have been randomly spraying, how do I

By keeping her inside where she will feel safe and by providing her with a
litter box.
>She does not have a
> litter box as she normally goes outside.
Get your cat a litter box and keep her inside where she is safe and won't be
involved in any of these territorial wars with the neighborhood cats, and
keep the neighbor's cats out of your house. That should solve the problem.
Your cat is not the guilty party here.

I have a cat door which she has been using just fine for the last 6
months. Unfortunately other cats fit through this as well.
I wouldn't have posted a message if I didn't give a sh.t about her...
excuse the pun. This has only started happening in the last few days
so I was concerned. FYI I have locked them out for the last two
nights and she has been fine. I think the solution is to drown the
neighbours cats, but your advice is good too. Thanks.

Well they make cat doors which will only open for a specific cat,
wearing a collar with suitable electronic signature. Something to think
about.

You're a newbie. Your opinions are not only unwarranted... they're
also unwelcome. I don't know who the hell you think you are,
anyway....You need to do your time silently lurking. Just as we all
had to do.

The answer's simple; put the blasted ill-mannered cat OUTSIDE. I don't
see the problem here...

Man... you women.... You're all creatures of faith, not of reason. I
only hope that Queen Kunt Hillary isn't like YOU. Because there's a

Your cat is under direct threat and is associating her smell with yours, for
the benefit of invaders. The poo message says that you and her are a team
and together, you will deal with any intruder. Bolt up the cat door
(visibly, don't just lock it - the cat has to understand that it's
impenetrable), and get her a cat box. Get some of that Feliway spray -
it's a sort of happy smell for cats and calms them down. Dr Peter Neville
is very good (and funny) on this issue. See
http://www.pets.f9.co.uk/shop/media/dcns.html.

An excellent set of suggestions that I doubt Jenna will follow. The truth
of the matter is, she knew she needed a cat box before she posted, she
just does not want to be bothered with cleaning one.

Cats are supposed to hate the smell of onions, so there's a possibility, but
a stinky one. They don't like walking on aluminium foil, but that's a
nuisance to have lying around. Perhaps the best idea is to arrange a few
expendable things in vulnerable places, where the cats on the counter will
knock them over - say a tall narrow tin full of marbles or bottle tops.
Something that will fall off the counter easily with a tremendous crash and
clatter and cause the culprit to slink off in denial. Might mean a few
wakeful nights, but they'll learn that it's not worth it. Worked for me
anyway. Of course, not much good if you live in an earthquake zone . .
I think we can be a bit too precious with the not smacking. Mother cats
smack. Adult cats smack each other, and worse. It's a language that cats
understand, used sensibly, rarely and in proportion to the animal's size. We
are talking about miniature carnivores here, not porcelain dolls. A hiss
and a light rap delivered at the right moment can sometimes be the only way,
especially for the more brazen crimes. If there's a risk a cat might jump
onto the hotplate of a stove, you need to be direct. Don't believe the
stuff about obedience and approval - that's just anthropomorphism rampant.
Cats are the original anarchists and will always be their own bosses,
whatever their owner needs to think.
