Considering how unappreciative he may be the first time this is done,
I'd suggest a groomer do it first. You can do follow ups. Watch the
groomer and ask for tips. The noise may scare him and he may try to flay
the groomer. Better that isn't you. ;)

Kaeli is right. Hire a groomer the first time and pay close attention. You
wouldn't get your hair cut by someone who had never cut hair before, would
you?
Try a groomer. They know what to do and your cat would be a lot happier.
