One of my cats (a black "tiger") has such a long dark coat that he gets
noticably more lethargic than his feline pals while outside in the sun this
time of year. I'm considering clipping his coat back to about half the hair
length with an electric buzz cutter. I've never done this before.

Does anyone else out there do it, and can give me some tips? Is there any
particular model electric buzz cutter that's better than all the rest? Is a
buzz cutter designed for humans just as good or better than a specialized
one for pets?

Considering how unappreciative he may be the first time this is done,
I'd suggest a groomer do it first. You can do follow ups. Watch the
groomer and ask for tips. The noise may scare him and he may try to flay
the groomer. Better that isn't you.  ;)

Once you've seen one shopping center, you've seen a mall.

Kaeli is right.  Hire a groomer the first time and pay close attention.  You
wouldn't get your hair cut by someone who had never cut hair before, would
you?

Try a groomer.  They know what to do and your cat would be a lot happier.
