It's been about three weeks now since we switched our beautiful, sweet
longhair (looks like and may actually be part Tuxedo Van) with the licky
granuloma problem to Natural Balance LID. She was previously only eating
Fancy Feast canned (chicken flavor).
The Natural Balance LID (limited ingredients diet) is grain free, as was
the Fancy Feast flavor we fed her, but Fancy Feast has numerous protein
sources in each can (fish, beef, poultry, dairy).
Natural Balance LID is made up of either Duck and Green Peas (canned and
dry) or Venison and Green Peas (just canned).
I wanted to stick with one variety or protein source (either venison or
duck) but she seems to go through periods where she'll eat one and not the
other.
However, she LOVES the Natural Balance Duck and Green Peas dry food. I
just bought it this weekend after not feeding her dry food for about 5
months, and the second I opened the bag, her nose was sniffing away and she
was at ther plate in seconds. I poured a little to start in her plate and
she finished it in minutes. It almost seemed like I was pouring catnip
into the plate! She walked away licking her chops and immediately went to
her sleeping place a very satisfied longhair.
What I really like about the dry food is that the pieces are small and
flat. They also appear very easy to chew, and for a cat that's over 10 who
doesn't have the greatest teeth in the world, it's a great formulation.
I'm trying to ease her into having the dry food as an overnight snack,
since she never finishes her canned food feedings. I'm thinking that a
combination of about 1 1/4 cans of canned food and about half of a cup of
dry food a day are just about right for a 10 lb cat.
As far as her skin allergies go, since we stopped the Fancy Feast, I've
been giving her very little meds (Tresaderm and/or Prednisolone 2.5
mg/day).
The wound on her left hind leg is practically gone, but she still has 2
round lesions/scabs on her right hind leg. The good thing is that they
appear dry which means that she's rarely licking them.
Here's the link to California Natural in the event you want to check the
ingredients (which I posted in a previous post):

Good to hear that your cat likes the duck and peas. Mine love the NB
venison and peas canned food. But I am close to running out and I have the
NB duck and peas canned and dry so I think they are going to get that next.
Hope they eat it. FYI, I feed my cats (both about 12-13 pounds each) one
3oz can food and 1/2 cup dry food per day. I split this into 2 feedings
(meaning they each get half of the 3oz can and 1/4 cup dry twice a day).
Seems to work for them.

Sounds like a good feeding schedule. Please post and reply as to what
happens when you open the Duck and Green Peas dry food bag.
I can see that a 5 lb. bag is not going to last that long. It would be
nice if all manufacturers would adopt the Purina Pro Plan plastic container
for dry food. It's much easier to handle than a large bag, and it's much
more sanitary. The plastic bags can easily be punctured.
It would even be nicer if Purina and Natural Balance can figure out a way
to issue a natural container of some sort, and do away with the plastic.
Glass is too fragile, and paper bags can't guarantee that the food will
remain sealed. Any suggestions? Perhaps large metal cans similar to
coffee cans?
My cat came running just like it was a bowl of catnip!

Were they instantly attracted to the smell of the dry food and did they find
the dry food as enticing as catnip?

My one cat (the one with the allergies) took to it probably the same as the
venison and peas dry. He loves the venison and peas too. But, personally,
I think he'd love anything....he loves to eat.
