My 3 year old male cat seems perfectly happy and normal, except that
he hasn't been interested in his food for about 5 days.
Last week, we had a very hot day here and I think Monkey drank some
bad water in a dish in my kitchen sink. That evening he vomitted 3
times and urinated in a couple places far from his litter box. He was
obviously uncomfortable and upset.
By 4:30 am, he was feeling much better and pretty much back to normal.
I called the vet that morning to see if I should bring him in anyway.
She said to keep an eye on him that day and if he seemed ok, not to
worry.
So now it's 5 days later and all his symptoms are gone. He's running
around, he's affectionate as ever, he's drinking his water, but he's
not eating much at all. Maybe a couple mouthfuls a day. I put fresh
food (dry Iams adult) in his dish at all the normal times, but he just
sniffs it and walks away. Any help would be appreciated. I'd hate to
take him to the vet if he's just being picky. BTW, I did try two other
dry brands and a canned food and got the same reaction.

Why not try some canned food instead? Cats are carnivores and weren't really
designed to eat dry cereal. How much less is he eating than normal? Might be
a really good time to take him in for a thorough physical examination.

I would recommend spoiling him for a bit to see if he'll eat something else.
His stomach might just be upset still.. so try bland foods. A favorite over
here is meat baby food (meat and broth only - check the ingredience). If
he'll eat that with out a problem, just wait a bit more. If he doesn't get
back on to his "real" food by Thursday, Id get him in to the vet for
something to help him calm his stomach, and probably wouldn't be a bad idea
to test his blood and make sure the "bad water" didn't do any damage to his
organs.

Thanks for your advice. I took Monkey to the vet yesterday. She
couldn't find any indications of obvious illness but we're doing a
blood test to check for kidney damage and infection. She said the next
step would be to do a scan for viruses. My roommate brought a kitten
into our place for a couple months in the winter. It was about 3
months old and had blood in his urine. He ended up going back to live
with my roommates parents, but I don't think they took the poor baby
to a vet. My vet suspects that Monkey picked up something from the
kitten. Let's hope not!
