crystals - do you stir in the sludge?

Hello all,

for those of you who use the crystals for litter, I have a bit of a gross
question. Our kitties' litter tray gets a gross layer of sludgy stuff at
the bottom, beneath the still-ok crystals. This happens long before the
litter should "expire" as judged by the indicator crystals, which are
supposed to fade from blue. While it seems gross to let the sludgy layer
just sit there, it seems equally gross to stir it in with the rest and
make the whole thing a little bit sludgy. What do the rest of you do?

My thinking is, surely the savings in litter-related chores you're
supposed to get from using crystals isn't worth it if you have to
stir in the urine-soaked sludge every couple of days to avoid having a
whole lake of sludge underneath the crystals by the end of the month.

Thanks -Jeremy

p.s. what the heck are those crystals made of anyway? There's no
"ingredients" on the package...

that's why I stopped using them.. that and they looked uncomfortable for
kitty feet.  I stirred..

Stir it in. If there's a lot of gunk, clean the litterbox.

Takes me a mere few seconds per day to stir the pebbles. IME, with 2
cats, the crystals can last a month or so, though I'm currently
changing the 'box every 2-3 weeks.

Sand, basically.

Pour kerosene in the litterbox. It dissolves cat excrement and
refreshens the litter.

Stir it.

It's silica gel, so the running theory  here is that said sludge is
supposed to be absorbed into more or less dry stuff.

It's something I noticed.  Not too much of a problem I've always figured -
you give it that final stir before the dump, and the box is a *little*
moist.  Wash it out, good as new.

You know the little packets of stuff you get in things like vitamin
bottles that you're not supposed to eat?  That stuff.
