Read Petition:
Animal Emergency Law
Body of Petition:
As many of you already know, we, as humans, have a PATIENT BILL OF
RIGHTS that applies to our hospital visits, and because of this and
other, separate laws, we cannot LEGALLY be refused treatment in an
EMERGENCY situation, regardless of whether or not we have ANY MONEY OR
INSURANCE. However, unfortunately, and, I believe, more importantly
UNFAIRLY, animals DO NOT have the same rights under the LAW, and
therefore, many Veterinarians CAN and DO refuse desperately needed
EMERGENCY treatment without PAYMENT UP FRONT FIRST. This Petition was
created in the interest of changing that standard, and I beg of you, pet
guardian or not, to PLEASE read on and consider joining us in our fight
to ensure proper treatment of the ones who's lives so LITERALLY depend
on US.

While I agree, unfortunately animals are thought of as property under the law
and don't have the same rights as human beings. I don't think this would ever
pass.

I dunno. We can hope.
Actually, some places, animals aren't just property anymore. People have
successfully sued for more money than the animal was worth when a
wrongful death occurred. This would indicate that the animal has value
beyond property.
Someday the law will catch up. It won't change if we don't pressure
people to change it.

I signed it. The whole idea of pets as chattel makes me sick and might
have made me file a suite in the past if laws were different.

Oh, after Bub died I kind of took a break - had a fundraiser to help
plan, have been doing some writing, feral cat clinics, blah blah blah.
It's been kind of a rough couple of months. Just the other day I came
across one of his old dermatology bill print outs with his little
picture on it and I had a crying jag for an hour.
How are you doing?

Thanks, Cheryl! I'll be looking forward to it. One cool thing is I got
myself an iBook laptop, it's great! I'm using it right now, and trying
to get used to this MT-NewsWatcher for the newsgroups. It's totally
different than using my Netscape mail on my desktop... :)
How are the kitties? Mine are all doing well - Sophie is curled up on my
lap right now, taking her early evening nap. ;)
xo,

BTW, in your posts there's this cute little cat up in the left hand
corner of the window. How did you accomplish this?

You have mail.

It's a feature of my newsreader, an X-face header. Other readers are
starting to support viewing of X-face headers now. Cool!
Here is a site that will convert images that are 48 pixols X 48 pixols
into an X-face and if you have a newsreader that lets you add your own
custom headers (like Xnews), you put that converted code in. :)
