To cats a killer

There was a murder in my neighborhood this week; they found the
body yesterday. He'd been shot.  I was home yesterday all day but I
didn't hear anything. Then I heard on the news that the family of
the victim tried to report him missing on Thursday, but he hadn't
been missing for 24 hours yet, so they couldn't investigate. That
reminded me of a reaction by Rhett and Scarlett on Thursday night,
some time between when I got home from work around 6:30pm and dark.
There was a sharp banging noise and they reacted to the sound the
same way they do to fireworks by puffing up and scattering and
trying to run from the sound. I tried to assure them that it was
outside, and that someone was hammering something. But thinking
back, there were only about 3 or 4 sharp bangs and that doesn't
seem like someone was building something, especially after you hear
there was a murder that could have happened at that exact time.

I reported what I heard to the police and hope someone else heard
or saw something that will help catch the killer. There was no car
at the scene when the body was found, so maybe the killer stole the
victims car, and someone saw something. He was a realtor showing
the empty house he was found in.

Animals are much more in tune with strange sounds than we give them
credit for. We should watch them more and maybe we'd be able to see
the clues. Just think: Scarlett and Rhett may help cats (catch) a
killer.

Wow, Cheryl. That's so scary. Although my cats are sissy girls who
usually disappear if the doorbell rings, a week or so ago someone
knocked at my door, a sharp rapping, and Gracie came running
up on the bed almost like she was trying to protect me. I don't
even answer my door when I don't know who it is, so I didn't
answer. He came back, and again knocked really sharply, and
Gracie ran to me and looked really worried. (Normally she would
just hide.)

When I checked later, there was a note on the door. Ironically,
another cat lover had a stray killiing his birds and chipmunks,
and having seen him hanging in my yard, thought he was mine.
His note was really angry--and I think Gracie sensed his
anger. So, yeah, I think they sene more than we  know.

(Of course I went right to his door and told him I never
let my cats out, and that I had seen the cat but he was
not mine. I made the mistake of feeding him once, though.
My neighbor was so upset, he loves his birds and chipmunks,
and he has three indoor cats too. I told him he could put a
havahart trap in my yard if he wanted, and we could take
the cat to Snowflake or one of the other no-kill shelters.)

I was out watering flowers today and one of the local news crews
that have been hanging around wanted to talk to me on camera. I
told them I might have heard gun shots, but didn't want to be on
camera telling them that. Then again I wanted to see if any of my
neighbors heard or saw something at that time, so agreed to be
interviewed on camera, but only if they didn't show my face or my
house. They were very interested in the story of the cats reaction
and asked me to describe it several times. They didn't end up
putting it on-air tonight though. Just as well.

I love wildlife, too, but you can't stop a cat from doing what it
was born to do. Other than keeping them in as you do and know. Oh,
and you know the saying right?  If you feed them, they're yours.

don't do that!!!! when i read the first line i thought "oh no! one of
cheryl's cats has bought it and some evil creature has cruelly and
brutally murdered one of her or her friends cats" after hearing of
sheelagh's trials with ringo being shot and other stories it really is
the first thing i think of and I dread hearing about any more
tragedies like that.
