cat has some weird anal problem

Shaggin - 08 May 2004 18:11 GMT Someone in here I hope has experience something similar to this. I have taken my cat to the vet twice and they have found nothing.
My boy cat as disgusting as it sounds keeps squeezing his butt hole then unsqueezing it repeatedly white his tail twitches really oddly. The skin on his lower back and around the base of his tail is really poofed out. It almost looked like its wet fur but its not. He does not rub his butt on the floor or anything so its not anal glands needing to be expressed.
The vet looked at him for fleas and stuff and he is free of them. There is no discharge from the area. And the vet just did a stool sample on him for worms and such but he found no worms either. I am at a total loss. I am worried that he might he worse and I feel bad because I wouldn't want these symptoms happening to me but I just don't know what else to do. I am having a baby any minute and I would like to find out what is wrong with him as I have kissed him on the mouth forever and am worried what he has could be contagious or something.
Please let me know if anyone else has heard of cats doing this.

[quoted text clipped - 15 lines] > > Please let me know if anyone else has heard of cats doing this. P.S. there is very little that can be passed between cats and humans. People get WAY too freaked out over having cats and babies. Millions of babies come into kitty homes ever year. I would consider the possibility of this being some strange contagious disease that affects the cats tail area being less than nil. It is now proven that babies and children raised in homes with cats are much less likely to get asthma or allergies, so kitty is probably better for the child to be than not. Again there are VERY few things that are contagious between cats and humans.
Rereading your post, I am wondering, Is he simulating spraying? Sometimes when cats are happy they do this odd tale shake with the tail up in the air. I'm just not sure *what* you are describing after a second look at the post. Does he seem uncomfortable when doing this? Where is he when he does this? What are the circumstances of when he started doing this? Is he indoor only or indoor/outdoor? Karen

Suggest you not give mouth kisses -- just pretend you do. MLB

Shaggin - 10 May 2004 04:19 GMT He is an indoor cat only. I know it must be hard for you to figure out what he is doing without seeing him but its really hard to explain. I have never seen a cat spray so I wouldn't know what this looks like. He does this randomly its never certain times. He'll be just walking around stop and shake his tail. Its not so much his tail he's shaking as the base of his tail.

Okay, what you're describing sounds like "happy butt", or something that lots and lots of neutered cats will do- a mock spraying behavior. Does he kind of march with his back legs while he's doing it?

Shaggin - 10 May 2004 20:56 GMT No he just stands still. And the fur on his tail is fluffed out all the time. If you can picture what the cats look like when they get spooked they look like a Halloween cat and there tails get all poofed out well that's what his tail does but its not his whole tail just about the last two inches of it closest to his butt.

Shaggin - 10 May 2004 04:21 GMT I cant give him canned food because when he eats it he practically chokes to death on it. The vet thought it could be a reaction to having worms but when tested he has no worms. We've never had any problems with any of the cat food we give him that's dry he was never bothered by any change that we noticed.

Buggering cats is illegal and can cause severe trauma to the cat. Shame on you for letting them do that!
You said Quote;

Shaggin - 13 May 2004 06:14 GMT In response to your odd comments. No one does anything sexual to my cats. And no I'm not worried about catching STD's from my cat was just worried about worms or something since I'm pregnant.

It almost looked like its wet fur but its not. Is it possible that he is licking the fur off of his tail? The tail is easy to reach, and thinning fur on the tail past the base would make the base appear to be fluffy. If he is itchy, that would also account for the flexing of the "starfish".
 Signature Cheryl /giggled over that description of the anus.
