Just wondering if any of you would know why our three year old cat likes to
lick plastic bags and also photos.  I'm always worried that there is some
chemical on these items and would cause Tux to get sick.

Does anyone else experience this and would any of you know why?

Thanks in advance

This is pretty common.  A couple of my cats have also had a thing for
cellophane.  I don't worry about them licking plastic or cellophane exactly,
but I *do* watch that they don't get tangled in the bags (esp. the handles),
& I take the cellophane away, since it's usually a small piece that could be
easily swallowed.  I wouldn't let them lick photo surfaces - not only
because they'd obviously wreck the pics, but also because of the chemicals
used in photo processing.

Many cats do this.  I read once that many plastics (and rubbery backing on
floor mats) have some sort of fish emulsion in them.  I don't know if that's
true, but they certainly are attractive to cats.  It is important not to
leave such bags around when you are not there to monitor the situation,
especially if the handles are not cut.  The very flimsy light-weight
plastics are especially dangerous because a cat can suffocate if the plastic
gets entangled with the cat's head.

One word of warning:  do *not* let your cat lick the large trash bags, such
as the ones used for lawn and leaf disposal.  They may have a residue that
is harmful.

One of mine does the same, so I wash them, tie them up into knots so
he can't swallow or shred them, and let him have them as toys.

I have a photo licker too. I think it is the chemicals used in processing. I
just have to make sure they are framed or out of lick range.
