Need Food Recommendation

I weaned my cats off Nutro and am having difficulty finding something
my very fussy girl will eat. Her brother will eat anything, but she's
the type of cat who would rather starve to death just to spite me if I
feed her something of which she doesn't approve.

This morning she "covered" her dish of Innova with the kitchen floor
to show me what she thought of it (she liked it well enough until I
bought a case of it).

Wellness isn't going over very well (no pun intended). The Beef &
Chicken REEKS of garlic, I don't blame her for not liking that one.

Today I bought two varieties of PetGuard. She ate some, but not with
much enthusiasm.

Can anyone recommend something else for me to try? I would like to
avoid by-products and glutens. Thanks!

Trial and error... that is what this process of finding a food will be.

Have you tried California Natural?

Not yet, I was looking at that brand on the PetFoodDirect website, but
they only have 3 flavors. I was hoping to find something with more
varieties, but I guess I can mix and match brands if I can find a few
things The Princess likes.

Has anyone tried Purina Pro Plan?

There is a variety of Purina Pro Plan that my vet euphemistically calls
"fish heads." It's actually tuna and sardines in aspic. When they have sick
kitties at the vet hospital who absolutely refuse to eat anything else, they
will sometimes eat this variety of cat food. I don't know what are the other
ingredients or if it contains byproducts or gluten, however.

One of our staple canned foods for "breakfast" is Pro Plan Chicken
and Rice. It has wheat gluten, but so far Purina isn't impacted by
the recalls.  I keep waiting for that to happen.

Fancy Feast is our other staple canned food. Several varieties. Some
with wheat gluten, many without. Unfortunately my cats like the
"grilled" varieties.  Of those that regularly eat canned food, my
cats like the "grilled" ones.

Don't feed her for 3 days and see if she's still picky.

Not even funny after 3 days of a cat not eating problems start in the liver
and kidneys and go from there

You can do that with dogs; it's very risky with cats. Their livers and
kidneys are too vulnerable.

Are you trying dry or wet?

If it's canned -- maybe try mixing the old and the new together and
increasing the new slowly.

This is wet.

When I introduce new food I do it gradually, so I do mix with the old.
If she doesn't like the new one, then she won't even eat it mixed in
with the old.

I have that problem, too. My two (of four) who regularly eat canned
food will go steal dry from the two stubborn ones when they don't
like what I serve. I keep hoping this will force the two dry food
junkies to go eat the canned. Doesn't work.

I buy the Wellness Beef & Chicken by the case for my cats. They all love it!

Pet Promise. Their motto is "Let byproducts be bygones." No glutens either.
No factory farmed meats, no meat from antibiotic-fed animals, no dyes or
colorings.  Best regards,

Don't you find the garlic odor very strong in that flavor? I don't
notice it at all in the other flavors.

That one looks good, thanks I'll try that next.

I'm going to have a big donation of food for my local shelter.

"Many cats eat in cycles, a trait passed down from their wild
ancestors that ate depending on the success of the hunt. Do not
mistake these peaks and valleys for dissatisfaction with the food.
Switching brands frequently can reinforce bad habits and create
finicky eaters."

"It’s not natural to do an about-face food change for cats. In the
wild a cat takes very tiny tastes of ‘new smelling’ foods and only
eats more once its stomach has had a ‘safe’ reaction to it. That’s
nature’s way of preventing food poisioning. The best way to change
foods is to introduce the new food s-l-o-w-l-y, one teaspoon at a
time into the ‘old’ food, gradually increasing it over a week or
even two, using your cat’s reactions as your guideline. It’s not a
race – it’s a big change. Easy does it, so your cat does not
suffer any consequences or label that food as ‘poison’. You may
want to learn about probiotics before starting that food switch."

This describes exactly Amanda's reaction to the canned food (after a
lifetime of eating only dry). For the first week or two, she completely
ignored the canned. Then, a little sniff. Then, a few days later, she took a
tiny taste. Then, over the next few days, she ate a little more and a little
more. Now (after a few weeks), she wolfs it all down.

The beef & chicken smells good to me. It never clicked in my brain that I
was smelling garlic, although I knew the Wellness cat food, in general,
contained garlic. Since I know garlic isn't good for cats, I had asked my
vet about Wellness before I bought it. Her feeling was that the amount of
garlic was sufficiently small that it wouldn't harm the cats, and she said
the reason the garlic was in the cat food in the first place was because
cats generally *like* garlic. I feed my cats twice a day. They also like
Fancy Feast, which has been called "junk food for cats," but I only buy the
"Tender Beef Feast" flavor because I think it's the only variety that
doesn't include byproducts in the first four ingredients. No wheat gluten or
garlic either. Now, I'm thinking I really shouldn't give them the Wellness
Beef & Chicken more than once a day.

I was concerned about the garlic too and my vet had the the same
opinion as yours. I believe Wellness dry now has no garlic, so I
wonder if they're eventually going to remove it from the wet.

Tonight I tried the Wellness Turkey again and she gobbled it up!
Hooray!

I guess I'll have to mix and match brands once I eventually find out
what she'll eat. This is no fun.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

You may need a bit more of the Nutro, to get her started.

I got rid of all the Nutro. I had several cases that were part of the
original recall. Thank goodness I hadn't opened any yet. I'm not going
to feed that to them again at all. That's what's making this change so
difficult.
