A Human shelter burned down last night in Florida, USA.

It is a Tragic story, & I hoped that by posting it, that some of us
might be moved enough to help them in some small way if you can...?

I found it horrifying & such a terrible shame too...

I SHOULD have added that there was no need to watch the Video link to
this story too.
You can simply read about it if you wish to .

It breaks my heart to think of such a horrendous thing happening, but
I guess any shelter is just as susceptible as any home would be. The
difference being that we can do more to help ourselves, where the poor
animals couldn't.
I hoped that by posting this, we might reach deep or suggest it to
others if they ask about where to donate towards. It seems a very
worthy cause.

I am not sure but was this not the same fire which happened a few
months ago? I seem to remember there being a fire in a shelter in
florida and a number of cats and puppies being killed in it, hope it
is the same one as i hate to think that another one has burned down
and more poor animals were killed in such frightening and horrific
circumstances.
I also hate to think of the terror those poor animals must have gone
through and the distress the tragedy will have caused those surviving.
i suppose what they need now are homes for the survivors so hopefully
the news will bring people to the shelter and get them thinking about
giving one of the animals a new proper home.

it is times like these that i will i was some multi-millionaire who
could do something practical like build a huge big shelter for them
all, like a big house with lots of proper comfy places for the cats to
snooze and old sofas for the dogs to sleep after they have been out
playing in a massive garden, and employ lots of people to look after
them and care for them and give the cats cuddles whenever they need
them and play with the dogs lots (stuff like frisbee and catch and
chase and 'stick' which involves basically waving a stick around for
the dogs to grab and run around with but which dogs seem to enjoy so
much).

why do rich people have to spend their money on private jets and big
yachts and sh.t like that? why can't they spend it on building nice
homes for dogs and cats and making sure they are well looked after and
loved? that would be so much better than lyign on the deck of some
yacht getting sunburnt and bored out of your mind. Why don't rich
people do something useful and constructive with their cash (like
paying a couple of thugs to go and beat the living sh.t out of those
vicious little c.nts who shot at Ringo and the other cats)?

i get so frustrated with the world at times, life seems just so unfair

No Bookie, I went back to the story to check it & it is telling me
that it happened last night & also that 70 cats died & also over 11
puppy's too...

Here is the latest link to the story for you to check the details...&
it is definately the 9th of April 07.
Thankfully most of the dogs got out because their housing was @ the
back of the building & they are still roaming and being picked up. It
really is such a sad story & one can't help but wonder if it was arson
if you are telling me that it happened there recently before this
incident?
This one was in a place called Jacksonville, does that sound familiar
to you?
I have a feeling that it is ion Florida?
Perhaps Matthew knows about this one?

( they were micro chipped, so that is how they are identifying which
ones were from the society that are still on the loose.)

Strange that everyone is passing this post.
It makes me feel like I have said/done something..?!!

I thought that it might touch a few hearts. If that had happened to
our Wood Green shelter, I would have expected locals to have an
interest in it....

I'm hoping that someone will explain if I have hit a sore point:o(
It is a bit like noticing an RSPCA Building going up in smoke.
I was touched by the locals that offered what assistance they could

It certainly was not intended as a troll posting...
That would be a sick thing to do!!!

i wish i could help but I could only give practical help such as take
in a few animals on a temp basis if i lived close by but there is the
small problem of the atlantic ocean in between so obviously i cannot
do that. since I am on the breadline myself right now i cannot offer
money, so i feel a bit helpless really. Reading the details of it
makes me feel like crap actually because there is not much i can do
from here, but if it happened at wood green or a nearby shelter I
woudl be round there like a shot with blankets and spare food
obviously

Yes, Jacksonville is in Florida.

More a feeling of helplessness, plus the fact that a huge part of
everyone's energy and attention is tied up right now with what to feed
our own pets, with sense of disaster looming if we make the wrong
choice.

> I thought that it might touch a few hearts. If that had happened to

Um.

There's an old saying: In the US they think 100 years is a long time;
in  Europe they think 100 miles is a long distance. I'm 1200 miles
from Jacksonville, and there are shelters near me that need donations
of food or money to buy same, because so much of what they had just a
few weeks ago has been recalled. I feel for those animals in Florida
and the people trying to care for them, but there are equally needy
animals and cash-strapped shelters right here.

Only a tiny fraction of the regular readers and posters here will
actually be "local" in any meaningful sense to the Jacksonville
shelter.

I certainly didn't interpret it as a troll posting. I sighed over yet
another tragedy, but didn't have anything useful or constructive to
say about it.

Don't you think that is rather selfish of you?

How would you feel if your home burnt down and most of the the animal
residents in it too?
Wouldn't you want someone to care for you?

No. I can take care of myself. Me and Mrs.Getiner do just fine without
having to go thru the degrading experience of accepting charity from
total strangers. We don't need anyone's help and what's more... we
don't want it. These people down there... they can slug it out on
their own or they can just call it quits and go belly-up. It makes
little difference to me one way or the other. It's not my problem.
It was however, a nice thought. And it was nice of you to think it. I
just don't share your empthy. That's all. Let them beg and plead if
they want help from the outside.. Let them fend for themselves like I
have always done. I simply do not care what becomes of them.

I take your point, but do you think that all of the Americans who
lived through floods last year, or the people that have their homes
torn away by tornadoes *wanted charity or sympathy*?

Or do you think that they were grateful that it was there when they
needed it...?
I don't want charity either, but it doesn't mean to say that I don't
empathise with those that do need assistance @ times of tragedy &
hardship.
( the parable about the strangers crossing the road rather than
helping the man in need comes to mind)

These people down there... they can slug it out on
> their own or they can just call it quits and go belly-up. It makes

Not today maybe, but are you certain that disaster will never knock on
your door?
You sound rather like Mr Bush, telling the rest of the world that
there is no global warming...!!
I wouldn't wish any sort of tragedy even on my worst enemy..But this
is the sort of thing that could happen to any one @ any time.
Open thine eye's I say!

It was however, a nice thought. And it was nice of you to think it.
I
> just don't share your empathy. That's all. Let them beg and plead if

I thought so too, but it does appear that I am in a minority here.
It wasn't particularly the people that worride me. More the
defenseless animals that had no choice but to go through this. I know
that  most of the dogs got out, & it is shelter for them that the
money is needed for...

I hoped by posting it here, that if people came asking where to donate
money to, that they *might* consider this appeal.
The problem is that there are so many worthy causes that even if you
do have the money to spare, which worthy cause do you choose?
I take your point, but I don't agree with you.

The one good thing about posting here, is that we are all entitled to
an opinion, & God knows that we all express it too....
The trick is not to get too het up & go into over boil & also to
respect the other posters viewpoint

GLOBAL  WARMING  =    JUNK  SCIENCE

The neo-liberal socialists are furious now that their ill contrived
attempt to seize control of the world's political & economic
power,  a.k.a.  the junk science of global warming, has been
exposed for the hypocrisy it is.

Meanwhile,  Al Gore sits in his Tennessee mansion burning
12 times the natural resources the average American family does

Last December, we had a huge power outage for several days. During the
first night, there were several fires from candles. One lady had two
kids, and they thought the candles were all out. They were just those
little tea candles, and they were in metal cans. But 2 hours after
they went to bed, the house caught fire.

They were able to escape, but they lost all 13 cats and 2 dogs. The
power was out. It was dark. And it took 20 minutes for the fire
department to find a route that worked since there were trees down all
over the place.

I cannot imagine losing so many animals at once. I struggle everytime
I lose just one.

That sounds terrible...!!

Only a few weeks ago we were discussing the idea of putting stickers
and posts up in our windows to alert The Fire Brigade to the fact that
there are animals in our houses.

I am not trying to suggest that we should ask the Brigade to rescue
our pets first,... more that if there is a reasonable chance that they
can be saved, that we wish them to try to without endangering their
lives of course...

I have only seen one such story personally. It was a family of with 2
kids and 2 dogs.
Father came home, got a bit peckish( hungry), left the chip pan on &
it boiled over setting light to the house whilst he fell asleep in
front of the T.V. Father died, & so did the dogs, as they were all
down stairs..
But mother threw her sons out the window and jumped after them. Very
tragic, & certainly not something you ever expect to happen to you, is
it?

And your right. Even one cat is enough to mourn, never mind multiple
cases

actually I would rather the fire brigade rescued my cats, i can get
myself out but my cats would probably just do sometihg stupid like
hide undre the bed and not have the sense to go for the nearest exit
so they woudl need the help to ghet out of a burning building. If i
died in a the fire trying to rescue them then that is the way it goes,
it woudl hardly be much of a loss for one human to die and anyway I
could not live with myself if i had survived but my cats had not and
they had perished in such a frightening and horrific way .
anyway what is one less human on this planet? they are so many of us
and we are so destructive and selfish that losing one or two is hardly
a big deal, we are not in any danger of becoming extinct any day soon,
and I am sure I have done a few things which have contributed to the
destrucion of the planet in my time. My pusscats however have lead
fairly innocent lives (a few birds and mice notwithstanding) and they
do not deserve to die like that in my view.

and yes sheelagh i am concerned about the animals in the shelter but
in my position both financial and geographical I do nto know what i
can do to help, is there anything I can do?

Actually, I probably didn't word that properly. You know how useless
my grammar is..
What I was trying to say was that I would ask them to rescue my cats
as long as it didn't put *their* lives in danger...

Like you, I couldn't really give a fig about myself. as long as I got
my kids and the cats out, the rest could burn to a cinder for all I
care....
( Oh & Mr Sheelagh, for Ibenz sake too, lol;o)

I am no one to talk about Global warming either.
It is only in the last 2 years that I have got rid of the coal fire
and installed gas central heating, I used disposable nappies for 5
kids(unwittingly @ the time), & I have driven gas guzzling cars too..

However, now is not then, & you would have to be a freak not to notice
that we have an extended autumn in the UK now, then a few cold snaps
in March, then a very long hot Indian summer right through to autumn
again...!!!!

Our coast lines are being eaten away all the time on the east coast &
houses are falling into the see. The village I live in used to be
called Saltarium for a good reason, because it was on the coast,
before men & women decided to claim it back from the sea through dyke
systems..but slowly the sea is claiming it back again & we will be
back to square one...

I believe the cats would do a better job of caring for the planet
too...
( especially if Ringo & Liger were in charge, lol;o)

If there is no global warming, then why is are all of these things
happening?

I feel the same way about that shelter too. I wish I could help them
more. It sounded dreadful. I guess the only way we could help them
would be to send them a pitiful donation, which won't be until the
Naughty P's (aka Naughty pants kittens, Poppy, Pinky, Paddy) go to
their new slaves....
I know sh.t happens, but that sounded really sad, didn't it?

I suspect in thise case, it wouldn't have done much good. It was a
really bad situation with over 2 million customers without power.
Their new plan for disasters now includes generators for all fire
stations (what, they didn't have them before?!?  Geez!).

Anyway, it sounded like it was veryhard to find anything and it took
longer for the fire crew to get there. The house was probably engulfed
with the people out. Neighbors set traps for days and combed the
shelters hoping to find any escapees.

>and yes sheelagh i am concerned about the animals in the shelter but
>in my position both financial and geographical I do nto know what i
>can do to help, is there anything I can do?

I had the same feeling here. I wasn't able to donate with money, and
the things on their needed list were not items I had extra of. I did
find a way to donate something useful (time and skill) rather than
money. Sometimes that is all we can do.

When I adopted Jay Jay, I became friends with the shelter lady. I have
always admired those who can foster. I can't because I would keep them
all. And I can't donate money very often. So, I just try to help out
when I can. Which just reminded me that I need to pack up two bags of
cat litter this weekend. Sometimes the shelter lady gets donations at
shows, but can't fit them in her van. So, I have two bags of litter
that aren't mine that can be returned to her this weekend. :

We can always make the little things add up.

Ask this "shelter lady" why she doesn't foster people babies. That's
'human children', in case you're confused concerning the importance
factor between higher and lower mammals. That might help ring a bell
in there somewhere.

because she doesn't want to risk ending up with some f.cked up nutcase
like you in her house that's probably why she doesn't foster kids.

You are right of course. I go and help out with the mucky side of
things, lol..
I am the cattery maid & I show potential adopters around @ mine.

Any help is a huge help.

I can remember a friend of my mothers swearing that when she died, she
wouldn't be leaving a penny to her kids because they never bothered
with her when they left home, but her cat had always been there for
her.

She got her cat from the same shelter that I work @ & sure enough,
when she died a couple of years ago, she left every single penny to
the shelter, who she felt deserved it far more than anyone else that
she could think of, lol;o)
Good for her..!!

I don't know where you live, but in the UK, you will often hear of
older people threatening to disinherit their kids & leave it all to a
cats home...& surprisingly, they do you know!!

We get people handing syringes in in, left over medications, small
donations & simple thins like cat litters, food & even flea
treatments. some of them we are allowed to use, but other bits we are
not allowed to, so we pass them on to other smaller charities, often
abroad that do accept them, more than gratefully too...
Well done to you & to all of the people like you..It is more than
appreaciated ....ALWAYS

Yes, after Kira died, I donated her leftover medications. Supplements,
some leftover antibibotics, some treats for seniors, an fluid bag that
was still good and only missing one dose. The needles are changed each
time, so it was still useful. The only thing I didn't donate was the
liquid medicine since it was contaminated from Kira.

The first thing that came to my mind was exactly the same thing...
Is someone torching them?

I assume you are familiar with the word Torching?
(If not, it means to deliberately set fir to to something,
somewhere..basically a pyromaniac on the loose out there?)

It seems  very coincidental that one or two should burn down.!! But
three, is past happenstance, doesn't it?

If you haven't been overrun with forest fires recently, I was hazard a
guess and say that you could have a pyromaniac maniac on the loose in
Florida?
It was a terrible thing to happen..!! I feel  the same way, may they
purr all of the way over the Rainbow Bridge...

As far as I am concerned, if it was a pyromaniac, may he/she suffer
eternally. The ancient Egyptians revered the cat for a very good
reason..Because their spirits go on for ever, & The thought of them
being punished by them is a very nice one indeed...
It really must be devastating for the residents of Florida though..
You live there Matthew. Can you think of anything that we can o to
help them other than send donations? It was horrifying to read about &
a real heart-string puller story. Very Sad indeed

I live about 2 hours away from Jax.  the other shelters  one was local
about a month ago the other was about 2 months ago down south.  If it is a
arsonist they are traveling to do this which is not in the usual motivations
for one.

Donations money and pet supplies is the best thing unless your a building
contactor and can donate time and supplies

The local shelter that I was sponsoring had to close last year due to
political bulls@t zoning laws.  We complied with every change they did  but
some commissars wanted the area changed to a commercial area from
agriculture.  They did everything to change the area.  The property owner
gave up after 5 years of fighting and moved the shelter about 3 hours away.
A big loss to our area  but things happen for a reason.  Now I give my $$$
and anything that  another shelter needs to another big no kill local
shelter.  This shelter moved to a full agriculture area  and has a 30 year
writ to prevent problems.  But she has so many volunteers and foster
families all she needs is donations.  So that is what I am doing now unless
there is an emergency than I am there.  But I need to go back to D.A.R.T.
and get recertified it has been a couple years since my training

That happened to a private shelter around here, but they couldn't get the
financial support they needed to secure another property.  They ended up
having an adoption rush and closing their doors.  Very sad.

Well that is good news. Funny thing about the news is that you hear
about the catastrophe, but you never seem to hear about the work that
happens afterwards & the hard work that people put into ensuring that
these problems don't happen.
I am ever so pleased to hear that your local one got a (writ..??) to
stay there for a good few years to come.
I guess from our point of view, the best thing we can do is send a few
$$ then? I would order some food and have it sent to them, but I have
no idea what their diet is or if they even need it...

This is going to sound dreadful, but It is the truth so I will say it.
when you have lived in a third world African country & then you come
to  the UK and compare it, you suddenly realise that the math doesn't
add up @ all.
you hear of X amount of Millions of pounds, sometimes Billions of £ or
$'s being pumped into the economies out there... but the realities are
that it hardly ever gets to where the money was intended.
Instead, you realise that the president has got a new helicopter pad
or his or her new Palace is almost complete..Consequently, it makes me
very sceptical about donating money because of irregularities like
that..
But then again,. USA pet appeals are nothing like what I describe. I
mention it merely as an explanation as to why some people are
reluctant to send bare cash appeals sometimes.
I am certain that in this case, it would be the right thing to do, so
I will.

Thanks for explaining about the shelters Matthew.
I think that in the UK, we forget that some of your states are twice
the size of our whole country. for instance, when I hear that it
happened in Florida, I think to myself.."Ah, now Matthew lives there",
but in my mind I forget that size doesn't come into it.
I am thinking of the size of Cambridge shire, rather than thinking
that both are relative, because they are not, are they?
Either way it was a terrible shame, & like you, I am pulling a prayer
for the kitty's and pup's there too.

a writ in this case is a 30 year permit and lease from the state.  It
prevents the rezone and changing of their area unless the property owner
which is her approvals the changes.  So for the next 30 years the county

To be technical they are palmetto bugs ( to us roaches that fly ) are far as
the furballs are concerned they are lunch :^)

No matter how clean your house or car is they find  away in pesticides or
not.  Something about 4 am hearing the furball in the bathroom shower
jumping the walls than a loud crunching sound. Than them walking out of the
bathroom with their tail straight up in the air  than jumping on your bed
wanting to head butt you.  EEK

I think your mum is wiser than you realise. She had a good point when
she advised you that you would make a good teacher,. I think so too!!

I also wanted to thank you for the links that you provided for me once
again. Once again, they were very informative and just what I was
looking for.
That must have been a heart rending moment when you were watching the
challenger  shuttle fall out of the sky?

It is the sort of thing that no one ever expects to have to witness,
especially when you have watched so many successful launch missions in
the past!!
I guess that you are also there when the launches are aborted @ the
last moment too?

One day, I will get over there to see what it is like myself.

Most of the kids are at the age where they are *thinking* about
leaving home, except for the younger two. I will miss them of course,
because being a mum is part of who you are. However, Of course I will
miss them, but I don't think that I am going to suffer too much from
empty nest syndrome ( I am not sure yet, but because having children
has taken up all of my adult life I have a feeling that there will be
so much to do that I won't feel too sad about it),  & there are so
many things that are on my *I must try & do this list*, that it will
take until the rest of my life to do them all....

I need to go to adult college to pass exams to be able to do  the vast
majority of them, but traveling would be a big part of that future....

I don't envy the heat or the humidity. but then again, you probably
have air conditioners like we did in Africa, to take the edge of it ?

I think that there is a hell of a lot of money to be made in the
future in the UK with installation of air conditioning. If the general
public where more aware of what it was and how readily available it
is, then they would opt for it..I am certain of it.
All I have to do now is figure out how to promote the idea, then
market & install it for them.... (via sub contractors of course!!)
Out of interest, do the kitties prefer lounging out in the sun when
they are not chasing around monster flying Roaches,

< the size of small cats, or not as the case may be>

or do they prefer the comfort of the middle of your bed @ night when
the air conditioning is turned on?

yes i think the same thing about distances and i forget that states
out there are so much larger than our counties, i always think they
are the same.

i too woudl send money but i have none, i have time and energy though
and tend to put that into helping our local cat's protection league
(usually shaking tins on street corners, outside supermarkets, on our
high street where all the nasty kids I used to teach can point and
shout abuse at me (but they do that anyway). I was going to bake some
cakes for our spring fair this saturday morning but my cake baking
services are not required it seems :-(
instead i will probably be just manning, or should that be womanning,
a stall of some sort.

I didn't think the cakes I made for the last one was that bad, oh well

btw terri's previous owners who left her behind when they moved house
have still not called me back about coming to get her so i think she
is here to stay, which my housemates are pleased abuot (but they are
not paying for her food or vet bills or cleaning out her litter tray,
or getting up at 6am to feed her). They don't deserve her anyway, she
is too gorgeous for them, a real sweetie

I only had a 10er to send, but if that heps toward theanything they
need then it was a 10er well spent....

No doubt my mother will leave her entire estate to the cats home, so
eventually some kitty;s will get a damened good windfall, lol
She is always threatening to do it..It would make me laugh if she
did...

ROFLOL...
The dreaded summer fete hey?
Don't worry, I get the same responsibilities with cat protection
league as well, & even my lots snotty nosed little mates do the same
thing to me, sniggering behind their hands...
I gave up the cake making a few years ago. I found it was cheaper to
buy some and send them in...mind you, my scones were rather like
concrete drops...
But the thought of standing next to a stall all day (@ my decrepit
age) is all a bit too much for me now, lol;o)

I'm really pleased to hear this bit of news. Frankly, they don't
deserve her. It was an incredibly cruel way to treat her, & by the
sound of what you tell us, then she is most definately better off with
you. It helps that the house mates like her, but even if they were not
elated, I am sure that you would talk them into keeping her all the
same. She is a sweetie pie after all is said & done.
I can't get over the fact that they simply moved & left her there to
fend for her self.

SHOCKING!!

I don't know about any one else, but I am finding Google in almost
reverse today..same for anyone else?

I am ever so pleased to hear that you will be keeping Terri. Her
previous owners didn't deserve her at all!!
It's Terri's gain & their loss, thankfully!!
