Hello, The

Re: And by the way, this is voluntary...

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Happy Thursday to you all,

Two days ago the Hill ( Science Diet) Rep phoned my
clinic to tell us about a "voluntary" recall.

She claimed that only 1 specific brand of their food, m/d for
feline diabetes was affected, as it contained wheat gluten
supplied from Menu Foods.

She is so full of it.

I have discussed this issue with several veterinarians who have
clients cats dying from renal failure after eating m/d.

This is NOT voluntary- they are ONLY recalling their food because it
has
caused cats to become ill and die.

And the company didn't even have the respect to phone or fax
veterinarians prior to the recall- Most vets found out about it on
the news.

Yet another example of why you should be leery of any LARGE
pet food manufacturer-they are in the business to profit first.

There are also published reports of dogs and cats becoming ill on
ONLY dry food.

It is still not clear exactly what is causing the kidney failure, as
melamine (the most recent toxin), is not documented to cause
kidney failure.

And the number of deaths keeps rising- it is now up to 3200
according tothe folks at petconnection.com

So what do you as a concerned pet owner do?

Go here to see a complete list of recalled pet foods:

http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/petfood.html

Here is a list of symptoms suggesting a reaction to the food:

Most pets vomit or become suddenly sick after eating contaminated
food- the reactions
are happening quickly.

-vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, lethargy
-increased or decreased drinking
-increased or decreased urinating
-mouth pain or mouth ulcers
-severe dehydration

If your pet has any of these symptoms after eating any of the
suspect food, then see your veterinarian immediately.

You can report a suspect case to the FDA here:

http://www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/complain.html

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////

P.S. Don't feed your dog or cat any wet or
dry food from the recalled food companies.

So, it would seem that the Hills representative who said the m/d dry for
cats contained wheat gluten and was affected is correct. The m/d canned
variety for cats does not contain wheat gluten nor do the other dry
varieties listed above. And as you state below, the vets you spoke to have
stated that they have seen cats in renal failure after having eaten feline
m/d dry, which contains wheat gluten, which is what the Hill's
representative said. So, why is she "full of it?"

My cats have been eating the Hills Advanced Protection Mature Adult 7+,
which does not contain wheat gluten, and they are fine.

I will suggest that this whole issue has forever changed the way pet
food will be debated by consumers in the future.

Proponents of certain brands will someone try to continue suggesting
"their" brands are superior to others.

One of the arguments has always been that ingredients are carefully
sourced and selected as per quality standards... we now now this is
bullshit since the SAME ingredient from the SAME source ends up in MANY
different brands of food.

I've been feeding my cat Science Diet Adult Chicken & Rice dry for quite
a while... she's doing well on it. The last batch of this food was
purchased sometime before Christmas and is about to run out in 3 - 4 weeks.

At this point I don't know what to do... I'm sure they are still selling
that food and if there is a problem it will show up soon enough. I hate
to switch her to something else because... well... we all know what
happens when the food is switched.
