Hi
I'm feeling very sad and completely helpless. Our cat Elise, was
diagnosed with Leukemia and FIV on Friday and the vet has told us to
expect to have to have her put down in a matter of weeks. At the
moment she seems content to potter around the house and have lots of
attention. But, she's eating very little and has decided that eating
her cat litter is preferable to food! Which is a little alarming. I
believe this can be due to mineral deficiency.
If anyone has any tips as to how we can make her final days as
pleasant as possible then I'd be really grateful.
thanks
Gill

I have a cat which was diagnosed with FLV three years ago. The vet told me to
euthanize her and her kittens at that time. He said they would probably die in
a matter of weeks. I didn't euthanize them even though they all had bad upper
respiratory infections. The kittens tested negative three times and went to
good homes. The mom Mimi is still with me today healthy as can be. I would give
your cat the best food, vitmain mineral supplements, interferon and lots of
love. Make sure she stays indoors and stress free. Cats with FLV can get
inflammed gums easily so try and brush her teeth. If she ever gets sick you
just have to treat her instantly to keep her healthy. FLV and FIV are not
always death sentences.

But sadly leukemia usually is which the OP said Elise is also
suffering from.

I don't understand. Why morphine?
To Gill: Love her and pamper her and watch her. If she's puttering around the
house, and still eating and drinking, I think she still has a fair quality of
life. When my Luke got bad, he stopped eating and started to hide. Hiding is a
pretty good sign your kitty is suffering.

No. There's very little you can do. It's quite pathetic, actually.
They can't walk... The poor things soon lose the ability to stand.
Their little legs begin to quiver so, you see.... Then they lose
bodily functions. It's really bad. The main thing is, you want to keep
the doomed cat away from any healthy ones that it might otherwise come
in contact with. Also, some say that it may be possible for the
infected feline to pass the virus on to people. The old and the
infirmed, or the very young. Just a thought. Sorry about your loss.

Just got in from work and received all your lovely warm messages.
Thank you!
Elise is my first pet . . . other than the goldfish I had as a kid! .
. . and I know I'm not handling this very well - I'm just out to do
the best I can for her.
Dad has been cat sitting, having nipped out to Sainsbury's to buy some
Covent Garden Chicken Soup! Anyway, having been initially fairly
unimpressed she's decided that its very In Vogue. Tomorrow she may
hate it - but today there is food inside her - not much, but I'll try
and tempt her tonight. Went back to work today - having been sick too
(although obviously not as bad as the cat!) and as soon as my boss
asked how I was I bawled my eyes out - poor guy didn't have a clue why
- but was very nice once he realised why - he's got cats too!! Also
found out I have to go away on business next week - which will be hard
- but I know my Dad will take the best care of Elise. What would I do
without him. Been a bit teary most of today. . . so hit the shops for
some retail therapy!! Feeling much better and am going to sign off
now to go and spend some quality time with my favourite cat!
Thank you all so much - this is the first time I've ever joined a
group - so hope I haven't made any faux pas (apologies if I have!) -
Glad I joined you all.

There is a very active internet group that could really help you answer
questions and have concrete suggestions... They have a 'talk' group which
is a little tricky to get into but its very worthwhile posting there.
http://www.felineleukemia.org
You don't mention how old Elise is---can make a difference, the real young
kitties are much more susceptible to the opportunistic infections... but if
you join this group you'll 'talk' to folks who have had cats with diagnosis
for many years.
There is also a FELV+ yahoo group which you might take a look at....

Thanks for this Chris, I shall look into the group and the web site.
By the way Elise is 5 (& increddibly sweet!)and has regained a little
of her appetite today.
Cheers

Basically, try getting her to eat just about anything you can--also, you can
try Nutrical, its a nutritional supplement that most cats love. Comes in a
tube, very thick--squeeze a bead on your finger or ina spoon--that might get
some nutrition in her to give you some breathing room. Thing is, there is
probably some underlying condition--some sort of infection-that is causing
her problems--lots of times, vets don't bother to look with FELV
diagnosis--maybe you could push your vet a little... do try the groups I
suggested--they can be a lot more help to you than I can.
Also, is Elise indoor-outdoor? How long have you had her? might help you
figure out if she's had this since birth-adult cats more resistant to
contracting then kittens. FIV generally from birth or cat bite....

Hi Gill, my heart goes out to you both, finding out your baby has such a
horrible disease is every mothers nightmare. But I must say don;t give up
yet, her final days may be years and years away!!! Many cats survive for
over 3 years, and some even die of a completely different disease at the old
age!
Please check this link I just came across which is gonna give you more info
about the diseases as they are Felv rescue cattery.

Hi
Just thought I'd post an update on an Elise. I have finally found a
vet who thinks its worth giving Elise a fighting chance. Things in
England seem to be a lot less progressive than elsewhere in the world.
I've moved from our vets in the village where we live to one 30 miles
away as our vet told us interferon and immunoregulin were near
impossible to get hold of for humans let alone animals!!! Charming eh!
Anyway, my Dad took Elise to another vet who was recommended by a
colleague at work who says that although her blood levels are at 8%
rather than a healthy 30% he thinks its worth treating her with
interferon to see if she responds. She's a little fighter, still
young and alert - so fingers crossed. This looks like its her last
chance as if she doesn't respond the vet has suggested it would be
kinder to put her to sleep and I'm inclinded to agree. But in the
meantime - thinking lots of positive thoughts. We love her so much.

I'm so sorry. She was lucky to have you, and I'm sure she knew how much you
loved her. There are times when mercy is the greatest gift of all.

This is a question asked out of curiosity, not necessity (TG).
Is there an on-line site which allows one to plug in feline symptoms and
get a listing of diseases which might possibly causes these symptoms?
Thanks,
Mary

I'm terribly sorry, Gill. You gave her a good life and she knew it. The time
we have with them is never enough but I think we get to spend eternity with
them.

Sorry to hear about your loss Gill. I recently lost my Eliza three months

Good luck. I'm glad you found a more progressive vet, and I'm
crossing my fingers that she responds to treatment.
