The cat is seeking the salt that is in the soap.  What are you feeding
it?

fancy feast (moist) trout, tuna, chicken, salmon, turkey.
friskies (moist) tuna and chicken
whiskas (dry) meat-flavored in a separate dish

he gets a varied mix so he doesn't get bored with one flavor or another
and he has a large water dish next to his food plate that is changed daily
with fresh, cold water. since he's a stray (about 1-2 years old and very
playful) we don't know his history. he doesn't spray or want to roam so we
think he's spayed. we can't afford vet bills on our pension so we thought
we would ask here.

It looks like you might be using a remote client on a log-in session.
That's unusual these days.

Anyway, I wouldn't let the cat lick the soap.  He might get diarrhea.
My understanding is that eating soap screws up the intestines by
killing the bacteria that form sh.t into clumps.

Good luck.

i post to usenet via a terminal at a university running a random character
generator to prevent spam. the outgoing email address is never the same.

my cat also chases his tail a lot, so much so, he falls over dizzy. is
this normal? he has a lot of toys so what could be happening?

actually this is a new setup they've started and a lot of people are now
using it because they're so fed up with spam. since using this, i get zero
spam as anything that is sent to any of the random character addresses
goes to something called dev/null. it's supposed to be a dead end black
hole that spam never returns from. from what i've heard here locally, i
guess it's really gaining popularity. you can now use it at home with your
home computer and connect to their terminals to use the program. something
old becoming new again, i guess. i also have the option of using my real
email address to write to friends.

anyway, thanks for the advice on my precious little cat.

(:
