Hey,

Could someone explain to me the function of a 'clicker', I've heard they use
it to train big cats, how would you trian your kittie with one?

No.

Now, if you'll excuse me I must (dribble) go and (dribble) wipe this
mysterious drool off my chin (dribble).

Clickers are used as a bridge for positive reinforcement, much like the
whistles in dolphin training.
You "load" the clicker by clicking and giving food in rapid succession.
The click means a treat is coming and "marks" the behavior while you're
fishing for a treat. This prevents inadvertent reinforcement for the
wrong behavior. Like if you ask a dog to sit and give it a treat, it may
already be getting up to get the treat, so getting up is what was really
rewarded. Eventually, the click itself becomes a primary reinforcer.

A lot more can be found here.

I use a small hand bell.  When I put down the cat's food dish, I ring
the bell.  I figure that if Tiger accidentally got out, ringing the bell
would bring him home.  Amber isn't interested in going out.
