I just picked my cat up and it's weird, there's this very obvious sort
of "pulsing" going on all through the middle of his body, heart to
stomach, as if he's breathing really hard but he's not breathing very
hard at all. I put him down and he's still doing it. He wasn't running
around or anything and I've never seen him do this. It makes the sides
of his body puff in and out, and it's very hard like his heart is
beating extremely hard. It's really weird, any idea what it is? He
seems fine, his behavior hasn't changed. He is almost two.

I'd sure see a vet ASAP

For how long has this been going on? Has it stopped since you posted?
Did he barf up a furball afterwards? If not, then I'd say a vet call
is in order.

I see my cats do that when they are about to throw up a furball. Has
it been going on for a long time? With my cats they do it for about 5
to 10 seconds before they spit out the ball.

That describes how my cat acted when she had a collapsed lung. It was VERY
serious and had I not rushed her to the vet immediately, she would have
died.
