Human food for cats ?

Calvin Rice - 10 Apr 2004 14:30 GMT In addition to things like Meow Mix and Purina Cat Chow available all day, and Fancy Feast canned food three times a day, I give my cats some human food as treats, or when they wont eat anything else. Gerber chicken and turkey baby food, and the thin sliced deli chick or turkey. Are there other human foods that your cats have from time to time?

I don't give mine any of my food when I'm eating it but one day my former feral Bonnie climbed over my laptop and was begging for what I was eating. It was a chicken salad sandwich and I thought finally she was getting a taste for meat (she will only eat dry cat food, all efforts at feeding canned have failed, with neurosis, even) and I gave her a piece of chicken. Nope, that wasn't what she wanted. She stuck her nose in the sandwich again and tried to tear off a hunk of bread. Strange strange cat.

The cat I grew up with, Charcoal--jet black with yellow eyes--got a passion for the gingerbread house my mother made for Christmas on year. He licked the coating off of the M&Ms that adorned the roof, and then started licking the roof. He always shooed him away and tried to keep it out of his reach, but by the time we got to eat it, none of the M&Ms had coating and there were three holes in the roof.
We still ate it, just not certain spots. :)

One time, I bought a package of gingerbread cookies. These were large cookies, 6 of the stacked, and wrapped in saran wrap. I came home the next day to discover all the arms gone. When I picked up the package, Kira ran over and started licking her chops, clearly interested in having some more. After that, I made sure I stored them in a box or dresser drawer. I do give her some pieces, but no more self service.

Calvin Rice - 11 Apr 2004 03:12 GMT My oldest cat is one I inherited from my mother, who I think gave her only the dry food, like Meow Mix, from an early age. She will nibble at good canned food, and some human food, but prefers the dry food, which I give her some variety of. Maybe a cat wants to stick with what it has had from an early age, but I'm only guessing.

He has a major thing for bread products. He will get on the counter and chew through the plastic bag for any form of bread. He especially loves hot dog and hamburger buns. If they were left on the counter, it was always obvious which one was going to be mine.
He has also chewed through a shopping bag and packaging for twinkies. He loves those.
He does not chew through bags to get to other items, except meat, and not always for meat. And he doesn't get on the kitchen counter for anything else, except years ago when we left margarine on the counter. We learned not to do that - he was always getting into it.

Jacob and Camille go berserk when I have string cheese. Cheese is the only "people food" that Jacob expresses interest in, but when he sees it, he's all over me wanting it.

Cathy Friedmann - 10 Apr 2004 20:34 GMT One of my cats likes egg salad. My other cat isn't into human food.
One of my previous (RIP) cats loved cantaloupe & also cheese. Actually, she loved virtually anything that was edible, but got only *tiny* treats of human food.

My sweet late Cory also liked cantaloupe...that was the only human food he ever expressed an interest in for 18 years...a tiny bit of cheese now and then but nothing else. Scottie likes bread products, including pizza crust, also. Abbey likes chicken but I'm a vegetarian so she doesn't get it from me.

Maynard was the runt of the litter, so he was hand fed as a kitten, and he grew up thinking he is human.
His absolute favorites foods are peas, chicken, and mushrooms, in that order.
He also loves corn, lima beans, sometimes cooked carrots, any kind of pasta, any kind of meat, jalapeno peppers, cantaloupe, potato chips (especially pringles and doritos), basically almost anything.
When he was very young, I used to share my Hagen Daz chocolate chocolate chip icea cream, and he would eat the chocolate chips. When I learned chocolate was dangerous, I quit doing that.
He will be 18 years old in June. He gets some form of human food every day, though it is usually plain meat and/or some veggies. He still eats cat food too. Since he is always on the light side with his weight, I keep his weight up by giving him extra food, usually chicken. He really likes the whole roasted chickens from the deli department, so we share them.
Good stuff, Maynard!
Kira also eats some people food, though she is much pickier. Sometimes, she will eat meat, sometimes she won't. She will eat corn and cooked carrots. And she will harass you for anything with garlic in it.
Chase will occasionally eat a piece or two of chicken. After several attempts with shrimp, he did finally decide they were edible. He's pretty weird. Meghan & the Zoo Crew Equine and Pet Photography http://www.zoocrewphoto.com

Her fangs get in the way. ;) She gets testy waiting for her turn, but when she hears the knife clink the plate she comes running back. She knows it means I'm at the heart and she wants her share.

Tortilla chip for Kami. Pretty much crunchy stuff, which is weird because she wants nothing to do with dry cat food, except for preferring her Pounce Hairball Crunchy Tuna treats a little more stale and crunchy. I mentioned the scorched cheese, also scorched bread, scorched anything. I guess she just adapted to my cooking skill. :)

I discovered the peas when he was about 4 months old. I was eating tuna caserole, and I always pick out the peas. I had a pile of peas and a pile with tuna and noodles. I was watching tv, and looked back to my plate at a comercial, and he was attacking the peas.
With mushrooms, I got this frozen rice dish that has chicken, rice, cheese, and mushrooms. I don't like mushrooms, so I pick them out and put them in a pile. He though I was saving the best for him.
He also like pineapple, so when my parents would get the hawaiian pizza, I would pick off the pineapple and give it to him.
It has worked reall well for us. Just about anything I don't like, he will eat, so he thinks I am giving him a special treat, and I don't have to give as much of the stuff I like.
>Kami goes for spicy food, especially Thai. She is Siamese after all. >;) Maynard is half Siamese. Kira is Balinese.
I forgot to mention that while maynard eats jalapenos, Kira will eat the red chinese peppers. Strange kitties. They eat all the stuff I won't touch. Meghan & the Zoo Crew Equine and Pet Photography http://www.zoocrewphoto.com

Careful of the baby food, btw - if they season with onion, it could cause anemia.

I checked the labels, and there is no seasoning. I'm talking about only the Gerber Chicken and Turkey, though, which is the only baby food I've been using.
