TK had a blood screening this week and everything is
sitting in the normal range with one exception....Calcium.
High normal is 10.8, TK shows an 11.1. The vet is still
calling this "high normal" but we're going for a recheck
in a month.
I know about the cancer and parathyroid connection to
high calcium, and I guess it's also associated with
kidney problems although all the other readings are
normal, but a question has come up about the effects
of the Diltiazem.
I asked the vet if the diltiazem, being a calcium channel
blocker, could be raising calcium levels. I was happy to
hear that she had already looked into it, but she was unable
to find any information indicating that diltiazem has an effect.
She's going to investigate this further and get back to me
within a week.
But I was wondering if you would happen to know anything
about diltiazem possibly raising calcium levels.
The vet, BTW, rated his heart murmur at around a 2 - 2.5,
so he still seems to be doing OK with his HCM. Chest sounds
clear, and gums indicate good blood flow. He's still acting
like a healthy, energetic, wildcat.
Any thoughts you may have regarding the calcium issue
would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
