I've put in a call to my vet, but thought I'd try to get some thoughts here
in the meantime.

Any suggestions on what I could give my 8 year old male neutered cat to help
soften his stool?  I don't want to give him pumpkin or a food with more
fiber, because added fiber can sometimes help stool pass more easily -- but
it also makes the stool harder.  I need to make his stool softer.

What about milk or cream?

(I don't want to tempt anyone into a discussion about good brands/bad
brands, but I feed this beastie mostly Science Diet Senior canned food, with
some Science Diet Senior dry food, both of which are fairly low fiber.)

Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

You can give him Laxatone a couple of times per week. Read the instructions
on the tube. This helps soften stool and helps get rid of fur balls.

One of my cats can't pass her hairballs at either end. After being
hospitalized twice for this problem, the vet suggested that she get
about a i inch shot of laxatone per day. I put it on her right front
paw. It's been years, and everything has been moving smoothly.

At one time I tired putting Laxatone on Ike's paw.  He promptly shook
his paw and I got the stuff in my eye!

Suggestion:   Let Ike lick it off the end of the tube  a little at a
time.

Cheeks likes licking it off of my finger. If she balks I put tiny bits
on her nose. She has to lick it off.
