I have three litter boxes in three different locations. Every few days
I find a small spider in one of the litter boxes. I put the spider in a
jar and release it outside. They apparently get in the box and are
unable to climb the sides to get out. Why do you suppose they get in
there in the first place?

Oh they can climb out... if they want to.
The thing is, they like it in there and want to hang out... and perhaps
torment the cat when doing it's business.
They likely keep wondering about the dufus that keeps dumping them in a
glass jar and kicking them out of the house! :-D

Hmm, are you sure they can't get out? Spiders are good climbers; I find them
on walls sometimes.
