Declawing is out of the question here in my house.
I know about clipping their claws. That is no problem.
I was thinking about covering the air bed with one or even two mattress
covers.
I guess that stuff will work, but I want to ask you all in case there are
methods not mentioned. I want to do it right. I do not want the matter to
cause friction between me and my fun cats.
Thanks very much in advance.

Is there some reason you prefer an air bed? Just asking the obvious.

Have you tried a modern one? I love it (a first impression).
I had to buy an AC air pump too, but it is powerful and has additional
uses.
I guess it sounds silly, but I will find a way. It's not a big deal, I just
wanted to check here before spending more money on the project.

No. Are you talking about one of those "Sleep number" beds?

not quite sure why you think the cats would puncture the bed in the first
place.. beds don't tend to be a prime clawing point.. and most beds are made
of sturdy enough material to not be an issue..

I think it already happened.

I guess that depends on where the bed is. I have a mattress on the floor
for my two cats, Kiki and Kitty, on either end. They both enjoy lying down
next to the mattress, grabbing it with all four legs, and going nuts.

I might look at a different name brand air bed.

I have had a water bed for years and the cats have never caused a problem.
The water bed has wooden sides (to contain the mattress) so the cats can't
get to the mattress there at all. I have a quilted mattress pad and an old
comforter under the bottom sheet. The padding and clipping the claws seems
to be enough to protect the mattress from any punctures.
I also have a cat tree and scratching posts around for them to scratch on so
they don't seem very interested in the bed unless it's to nap on. It's a
popular spot for that :o)

One of mine just loved to "poke" down in the sides between mattress and
wooded sides... maybe it had to do with the heat attracting him? He also
had plenty of scratching posts, frequent claw clipping, etc.,....

I find that the bed is a target even with cats who aren't likely to
scratch furniture. Shadow doesn't scratch most furniture, but he does
scratch the corner of the bed by my head to wake me up in the morning
because he's learned that it triggers the response he wants -- me to
wake up and feed him. For the other two, I had to put a scratching post
next to the bed because they used to scratch it too. Not anymore; the
post makes them happy.

Cats totally puncture airbeds. My sister went through two of them and
then gave up. Not a good thing to have with cats. You could try
putting a scratchy right next to the bed, but I wouldn't bet on it
working. Hope you find a solution...

Options:
1) Put the air bed away and get a regular mattress.
2) Install "SoftPaws" on the cat. This is an item that requires regular
maintenance as they tend to fall off when the claws grow. Also, your cat
may not like them and go to some effort to remove them and there may be
some resistance during installation.
3) Cover the air mattress with thick enough or hard enough material that
the claws cannot penetrate to do damage. 2 inch thick foam pad?
4) Keep the cat out of the room where the air mattress is located.
I suspect your cat has discovered a new toy... your air mattress. :-)

You have cats and you got an air bed! Two things I won't get are an air bed
and a water bed!!!
But I like you because you won't declaw your cats. Sometimes cats really
rise to the occasion, you know. Maybe yours will, too.
Good luck,
Barb
Of course I don't look busy,
I did it right the first time.
