i know i need to take her to a vet, so please dont tell me that. we
cant afford it at all right now. so that is not an option. its either
food or the vet...

out cat has become very sick. i got her  lactated ringer fluids and
have been giving her an injection twice a day. i wait till almost all
of them are absorbed before giving her more.

she meows, the stay away im mad meow, whenever you pick her up. she
seems very sensitive on her right side near her leg(when sitting/laying
on her belly folded up). anytime you move her she starts to throw up
foul smelling green vomit. does this twice and stops.

we thought it was food poisoning. the kids gave her refried beans. and
that all that we could figure out she ate.

i thought she was doing better the other day when she started to
stretch, but doesnt seem any better now. she is still very dehydrated.
no third lid showing, but her eyes are running a little bit. over the 4
days that this has been going on she has had one eye form a dark tear
and the other slightly less. her pupils are dialed for the most part,
unless in the sun.

no fever. no fast breathing. no urine or stool.

what can we do? we can afford $30 tops on meds... i was looking at
holistic meds and found Newton Homeopathics Detoxifer. the only problem
si i have to order it and it will be her next week... i dont think we
have that long... does this sound like food poisoning? renal failure?
what?

thank you for any advice!!

Just take her. And shut the f.ck up about the rest of it.

I agree.  If you don't take he to a vet she is going to die.  Maybe you are
better off without a cat if you can't take care of it.  Some vets will take
pet surrenders if it is sick and they can make it well. Then it gets adopted
out to someone else who can care for it.

I concur, your vet may be willing to arrange a payment plan if you can't
afford a lump sum now. If you cannot afford to pay for any kind of treatment
in any way then get a f.cking goldfish or similar pet that will be cheaper
to look after, it is not fair on your poor cat.

Yeah, but with a 22.9 % interest rate. The frigging Mafia gives better
rates than that..

ok... this is a $1500 cat... we took care of her just fine for a long
time... and many cats before this one. its just that the past few
months have been very hard since we lost our business in the
hurricanes. we are doing everything we can. she is getting better with
the treatments we are doing. i thought that there would be someone out
here that has gone through food poising with their pet and could give
us some pointers. but as i see by some of the reply they are just
judgmental jerks on here.

You PAID a breeder $1,500 for a cat when there are millions being put
to death weekly for lack of homes?

So you flamed her without knowing that maybe she had taken the cat
off of the street and had provided it with shelter and the basic
necessities.

Talk is cheap.

Sounds like it might be a blockage.
It doesn't sound (from your post) like food poisoning.
If you don't get the $1500 cat to a vet, it will probably be your
ex-cat.
See if there's a free clinic in your area.

Free cat, stray cat, $1500 cat, doesn't matter.  I agree it needs to go to
the vet, regardless of the monetary value of the cat.  It's still a living
thing that does not deserve to suffer or be in pain.
m_kelbell@sbcglobal.net - 08 Apr 2006 12:40 GMT
Almost all cities has a low cost vet clinic for pet owners of limited means.
Please investigate and find one.

Even if your family income is above their eligibility limit,  if you explain
you budget and how you can't afford care, I'm sure they'll treat your kitty.

In Austin, there are 2 groups doing low cost or free vet care.  Spay/neuters
are either free or $25 depending on family income.  Basic shots are $12,
full shots including Felv, Fip are $40.   They vets volunteer there part
time, and don't charge for their services.

Call your local United Way, they should be able to tell you how to contact
your local low cost vet clinic (United Way is now keeping lists of all
service organizations for people who need help.)

Does the actual value of the cat really matter?  Good to hear that for a
long time you took care of her and provided for her, but now is the time it
seems that she needs you to take care of her a lot.
Sorry to hear about your loss of your business, but, as harsh as it may
sound, life goes on.  You lost a business, and if that's the worst of it,
you are very, very lucky.  Could have had a worse outcome, by far.
It sure doesn't sound like food poison, based on what you said.  Refried
beans would probably not make a cat sick.  If the baby tosses food off her
high chair, our cat is guaranteed to be right at her feet to pick up scraps
if someone's not faster.  She's eaten everything from squash, bananas and
cereals to raw bacon that's fallen and not picked up faster than the cat can
get to it.
You've gotten a lot of replies so far, yet everyone has suggested taking
your cat to the vet, as it's clearly the thing to do when you have a sick
animal, and especially if you don't know why it's sick.  Unless you're a
vet, there's no way you can say that yes, your cat has food poisoning.  No
one here, even if there's a vet among the group, would be able to say what
is exactly wrong with your cat over the Internet, sitting in their own homes
or workplaces, with their nose glued to a computer screen.
No one's being a judgemental jerk.  Everyone seems to be offering you the
same advice, which, in all due respect, would most likely be the best for
your cat.  You seem to be wanting someone to pipe up with, "Oh yes, your cat
is definitely suffering from food poisoning, so give her some Tums and
ensure she stays in bed on complete bedrest.  Give your cat a glass of warm
milk, and maybe even some apple juice with some hot soup.  It will make her
feel all better."
That's not going to happen, so either take the advice or leave it.  No one's
being judgemental.  You have a cat that's sick.  You can assume whatever you
want, but unless your business that was lost was a vet clinic, take her to
one that is still standing and in business.

It's the classic response of someone who runs into a lot of hostility.
They write it off, and they leave.

I think she means that because they were ignorant and malicious
enough to (allegedly) pay big bucks for a breeder cat, this means
the cat must be "worth a lot" to her.

I repeat:

Ugh.

Take her to the vet or give her to someone who can and will take her.  She
is obviously sick, and unless you are a vet, then you should not be treating
her on assumptions.  Teach your children that cats eat cat food, not refried
beans, not McDonald's Happy Meals.  I would doubt refried beans would make a
cat as sick as your say yours is, but I wouldn't know, I am not a vet, nor
am I a specialist on cat diet, other than feed the kitty cat food.
Your excuses are off the wall.  Take the animal to the vet or give her away
to a new owner who will do what she needs.  So you can't afford it?  It's
not going to take a second or third mortgage on your house to pay a vet
bill.  Call around and find a vet that will accept a monthly payment plan if
you currently do not have a vet or your current vet doesn't have payment
plans.
The only problem is that something isn't right with your cat.  What caused
it isn't the issue, nor is waiting for medication.  The issue is getting the
cat into the vet asap.  No urine or stool?  Then your cat is dehydrated and
not eating, or bringing up everything she eats, which means she's lacking in
nutrition, which is probably not helping her to get better on her own.
Poor thing... Just get her in the vet, even if it means to cut the cable TV
or Internet for a month or two, or not going out for dinner for the next 4
or 6 months.  It's unfair to your cat that you don't have money.  Vet bills,
both scheduled and emergency, are something every owner should take into
consideration when getting any type of pet.  Some cats or pets in general
can live as long as their life expectancy without needing to see a vet once
in their life, but that's not usually the case with any pet, and it should
be something taken into consideration any ways.  A responsible owner would
be able to manage, one way or another, should sh.t hit the fan, or have the
compassion to give the animal up if they are unable to manage for any
reason.
I was given a 'healthy' iguana years back only to find when the original
owner brought her over, she had such a bad, bad infection in her tail that
*I* had to take her to a vet, only after first finding one who would see an
iguana, and have her entire tail amputated so she was left with about 2" of
a stub left... Went from a full grown, 5ish foot iguana to about 2 and a
half feet.  I coughed up the $400 to pay the vet, and yes, I did have to
make a payment plan of $100 up front and then $50 a month for 6 months.  For
me, at that time, it meant no heading out to the bar with friends every
Friday night and my excuses was simply, "Iguana"

I would say that if you can not afford to take care of her that you find someone to take
her that can!!!!  Why make the animal suffer?!?!
Rhonda - 07 Apr 2006 17:12 GMT
Jetson,

No one can diagnose over the computer, not even a vet.

She could have a broken leg. She could have food poisoning like you
said. She could be in so much pain she's going into shock. If she's not
eating -- in just a day or two she could get liver damage. Cats' systems
cannot handle fasting.

Call around to every vet you can and see if they will take payments.
Call the Humane Society and see if they can suggest a lower cost vet.

I know this can be hard, but I believe you have as much responsibility
to this cat as you do to one of your kids.

I hope you can work it out, she's counting on you.

Can you not borrow ome money from a friend or relative just to get you (and
the cat) over this crisis?

If your cat is so ill - then the costs will mount up anyway as she becomes
worse - and eventually it may be too late to save her and you will still
have to pay only it will be all for nothing.

If you really cannot afford to treat your cat - then please don't let her
continue to suffer. You must do the kind thing - either hand her in to a
rescue centre that has a vet or, if she is termianlly ill, have her put to
sleep.

Sorry. But easing the suffering of the cat is paramount.

You made a big mistake whining about your financial state to
this newsgroup and describing the misery your cat is enduring.
Regulars here may indulge in odd interaction between themselves
(polite description) but they are all about feline healthy state
and welfare of cats in general. I don't care what you don't
wanna hear: do whatever it takes but get your cat to a vet
NOW. I don't think you are a starving homeless street person
or you wouldn't have a PC to post with; can you *not see
that your cat is dying?* Duh.

This will sound mean but........take her to vet or give her to someone
who can afford to have a pet.And dont get any more pets until you can
take care of them. Your cat is very sick!

What in the world are you doing giving her fluids without consulting a vet
first?  Are you aware that processing sub-q's puts extra work on the kidneys
and giving them when they're not needed can increase blood pressure and cause
overhydration - overhydration could cause her to feel *very* uncomfortable
and she may also lose her appetite due to the fluids pressing on her stomach
and causing her to feel full.  Too much fluids can also cause heart failure,
particularly if your cat has heart issues you're not aware of.

>holistic meds and found Newton Homeopathics Detoxifer. the only problem

You think that this is going to cure her when you don't even know what she
has??   For all you know, this product can make her problem worse!

>have that long... does this sound like food poisoning? renal failure?
>what?

NO ONE can tell you what this is over the Internet - you need to bring her to
the vet.  How would you like it if you were in pain and agony and no one
helped you?  Just go to the vet immediately and tell them your situation.
