Cats in the bathroom..

Just tossing this out for observation and comment.

I have 2 cats in my household, a 4 year old spayed female and a 9 month old
female due for neutering soon. Both are quite contented, well adjusted to
each other and the household in general. Both have a normal interest in
dominating the attention of their favorite personalities within the home
which consists of myself, my wife, and an 8 year old son.

The 4 year old cat has developed a habit of following me into the bathroom
and snuggling herself down into the sink which is immediately next to the
commode where I am seated. Regardless of what she may have been doing prior
to me heading to the bathroom, she jumps up into the sink basin, circles a
few  times and nestles down, form fitting herself to the contour of the sink
as snugly as possible. She purrs quite strongly while doing this and
responds to petting and verbal interaction normally.

At no other time does she show the slightest interest in roosting in the
sink. I've heard of other cats who have a preference for sink nesting for
whatever reason it appeals to them but this *only* occurs when I am in there
using the facility. Recently the younger cat has begun following the 4 year
old on these ventures. Not to be outdone, she will hop up on the vanity,
circle past the older cat, walk across the toilet tank and climb up on my
shoulders to roost. Where did my privacy rights go?

It's not like either of them are lacking for attention throughout the rest
of the day but why such a heightened interest in me at this rather personal
moment? If I shut the door before they arrive, there will be paws under the
bottom of it trying to open it. Comments?

My cats do not nestle in the sink, but they all (3 of them) follow me in the
bathroom and stay there with me. My new male cat (age 10 months) sits on the
side of the bathtub (on the other side of the curtain) while I'm showering.
They are in love, I guess (like yours are).

Well that's possible I guess. However I can think of much more 'loveable'
moments than that.

Mine all follow me obsessively to the bathroom, and Jacob tries to
"save" me if I'm in the bathtub. He goes absolutely nuts, mewing,
pawing at me, grabbing my hand between his teeth and trying to pull
me out of the tub. He's a strange little guy.

I don't know what it is about the bathroom. Undivided attention I guess? All
three of mine follow me in (and they do not all get along so it is always a
bit trying if they get into a tiff and I can't do anything about it).
Mostly, they just seem fascinated that you MUST pay them attention. They
figure, well, hey, you're not doing anything else important right now.

Good possibility. The 4 year old seems to be constant in her demeanor
whether I pay any attention to her or not. The kitten seems to have a bit of
fascination with various plumbing items, particularly when she sees water
moving - faucets or toilet water swirling. The young one has a few times
jumped into the tub with my son and immediately jumped back out without
becoming particularly distressed.

She would like a fountain then. Many cats are fascinated with moving water.

Kami comes in and watches me in the shower (clear shower curtain) right
up until I look back at her.  Then she leaves.  Peeping Tom?

It *can* get worse.  There were times when Prissy was alive when I
kept her litter box in the bathroom. On occasion, she would follow me
into the bathroom when I was engaged in, to put it delicately, more
extensive business and she would decide that since it was a good time
for Mommie, it was a good time for her, too. :-)  Those vent fans can
only do so much in that situation.

Piss off. Adding this group to the group lines of your posts

I see... Mary the Clairvoyant, eh? Come see me when you master choad
smoking, mmmkay?

Maybe - maybe not. In any case it would certainly take better and stronger
than the likes of you to dictate to me where I will post in this section of
the Internet underbelly known as Usenet. Despite my dark vision and my
propensity for taking glee in the less savory of humanity's ventures, I do
have a pair cats in the household which makes my posting of their exploits
or questions regarding their health/behavioral items, etc very much on topic
and appropriate to this group.

If however you wish to put a line in the sand for my consideration, do so at
your own peril.

Perhaps you and Mary can form a committee and report back to me when you
have choad smoking figured  out.

all five of mine follow me in.. consider yourself lucky that she gets in the
sink.. my little female crawls into my pants around my ankles.

I have a theory why cats like to be in the bathroom when you are 'doing your
buisness'.. cats communicate with one another with different sounds that are
created through exhaling.. I can only imagine what Im telling my kitties
when Im exhaling while doing what Im doing.. what ever it is, it must be
good.. cause I always have an audience..

Both of my cats follow me into the bathroom. Cody loves to crawl into my
pants like that - I thought he was the only cat that did it.

They just want to "help".

This can be explained quite easily.  You lost your privacy by not keeping your
door closed and protecting it.

Why are they doing this.  Simple.  They love you.

The litterbox is in our bathroom and the cat likes company.

I don't know what it would be like to go the bathroom alon. Neither
does my husband. Our cats. follow us and if the door is closed, they
scratch until you open it. I think that they realized that you're in a
position(with your pants around your ankles) and can't move so you can
Now give them the attention they deserve. Pretty smart, Huh? I get up
during the middle of the night to use the facilities. One of my cats,
the baby, always gets up to be with me for a tummy scratch. He can be
at the opposite end of the house but when he hears in the bathroom,
he's there! Enjoy!

Camille will RUN, and I mean haul serious a$$, to get into the
bathroom as soon as she hears me go in there. At least once a day she
comes shooting out from under the bed to launch herself into the
bathroom.

All three of my cats follow me into the bathroom, and my younger male does
the same thing as your 4 year old -- gets into the sink and purrs at me.  My
oldest sits behind me on the toilet tank, and our middle child lounges at my
feet.  I can only assume they think it's some kind of ritual and want to
participate - L.

Hmmm. I wonder what it is they think they could do? Toilet must be as
confusing for a cat as it is for a kid. We chase 'em off from making messes
anywhere else in the house but here's a big white chair you can take a crap
in.

HAR!

Maybe they're waiting for their turn.  <insert visual picture of cat with
hind legs crossed "COULD YOU HURRY UP PLEASE?"

All 4 of my cats like to accompany me to the bathroom.
They aren't usually all there at the same time, but
sometimes it can be pretty crowded in such a small
place.  At night before bedtime, Anna likes to sit on
my lap while I'm sitting on the potty.  I have to
be sure and cover my "lap" so my poor legs don't get
scratched up.  I'm really planning to be there only
a short while, but end up staying until Anna has
gotten her fill of cuddles or she gets upset with
me.  It is now part of the getting ready for bed
ritual.

My 3 cats take turn following us 3 humans to the potty - one at a time
and they come in and out of the room checking the closet and the tub -
wanting petted.

Only one is brave enough to come in during bath time - Miss Thang
follows my daughter to her bath and sits on the toilet seat watching -
sometimes she puts her front feet on the tub for a closer look.  She
hasn't fallen in yet but I wonder if that happens if that will end her
visits.
