If I leave my kitten's food bowl down (she's 4 months old) she'll paw
at it to play, but then my whole kitchen floor will end up covered in
her food! I can't seem to get her to stop without putting her food
bowl on the counter. Is there another way I can get her to stop
without having to pick up her food?

Have you tried feeding her off a flat plate? Maybe she doesn't like eating out
of a bowl? The other thing you could do is lay some newspapers on the floor
underneath her dish. I have to do this with my cats because they're very messy
eaters.

Newspapers?
Moist food item lands on newspaper soaking up some of the ink, pet
consumes food item including the ink soaked up from newspaper.

Except once it lands on the newspaper, it stays there. My cats are wasteful
little beasties :)

I don't know of any newspapers that use anything but soy inks these
days, which are completely harmless. Even the older inks were
perfectly safe. If newspaper ink were even the slightest bit toxic
there would be eleventy-seven government agencies regulating and
banning them.

Yes, leave the food on the floor until your cat eats it. :-)
Your cat has discovered another source of amusement, playing floor
hockey with kibble. Perhaps you could limit the amount of kibble put
down each time and not refill until it is all gone. The other option is
to place a tray with raised edges under the food bowl... something like
one of those boot trays that keeps the water dripping off all in one
place (familiar to those of us living in the snowbelt ;-) ). This makes
playing shuffleboard with the kibble a whole lot more challenging.

Reduce feeding times. Then, she'll really be hungry and be ready to
eat instead of play.
