"H5N1 was found in samples taken on February 22 by mouth swab from three
cats in the Noah's Ark animal shelter near the town of Graz in the southern
Styria province, Oskar Wawschinek, spokesman for the Austrian Health and
Food Safety Organisation (AGES), told AFP.
All three cats are still alive and subsequent tests have shown two of the
cats no longer carry the virus. Tests are continuing on the third.

"Nothing remained, nothing developed, they did not become ill" Wawschinek
said, explaining the cats had fought off the bird flu virus as humans fight
off the common cold virus to avoid becoming sick."

"The WHO says there is no evidence that cats can be involved in the spread
of the disease."
