Kitkat - 24 Mar 2004 06:21 GMT Now that I'm out of lurk mode...I've got a question.
Anyone else out there allergic to their kitties but choose to suffer like I do?
curious, Pam

I was diagnosed at age 5, but I already had a dog by then. I'd much rather suffer the allergies than give up the animals. I just put up with the sneezing and blowing my nose. I do sort of have a built iup immunity. Just usually a good blow in the morning, and I'm okay. I do have to wash the bedding more when she's shedding, and I learned the hard way not to brush her on the bed.
Now, I did have a good example. My mom is allergic to both cats and dogs, and we have always had both since before I was born. She gets allergy shots once a month to keep hers under control.

Cat Protector - 24 Mar 2004 20:30 GMT I think a better thing to say is allergic to the dander and not the cat itself. I hate it when people say they are allergic to cats. It makes it look like they blame the cat when it isn't even their fault.

Obviously, the many of us who choose to have pets despite our allergies certainly arent laying "fault" on anyone.
Its not just their dander, either. You can be allergic to their urine and saliva.
Silly semantics, if you ask me.

I've never blamed my animals for my defective respiratory system :)
I'm on my third dog now, and both two and 3 have been long haired, plenty of shedding fur shelties. I love fluffy dogs, so I will continue to have them. I have every intention of having at least 1 dog in the house at all times. Preferably two or 3 so that they have a buddy of their own kind to play with.
My mom is allergic to both cats and dogs and I don't think I have ever heard her complain about the animals. She's the one that started us down this road. My dad, the one without allergies, is the non-pet person, and he has grown to love them too.
Now, the real problem is that my mom gave me allergies (almost anything in the air will qualify), and my dad gave me a small throat, so I have a lovely system.
You should have seen me at horse farms a few years ago. I'm allergic to hay as well as dust, mold, pollen, trees, grass, weeds, etc. So, when I was at photographing the horses (my small business), I woudl be going through kleenex like crazy. The embarassment of people feeling sorry for me was much worse than the actual allergies.
Since then, I have found a couple things that help clear up most of it, so I only have minor blowing. And I always carry tylenol, including chewable for when I am out in the field. So, I can head off a headache before it really gets started.
Overall, I find those allergies to be far worse than the daily exposure to my dog. She just makes me blow my nose in the morning and clear my throat.

Cat Protector - 25 Mar 2004 17:16 GMT It is assigned every time a person says they are allergic to their cat. It is the dander itself not the cat.

Cat Protector - 26 Mar 2004 09:36 GMT But I do not think it is fair to blame the cat. A cat is a beautiful and wonderful creature and does not deserve the negative connotations.

Why are you assuming that everybody "blames" the cat when they say they are allergic to cats.
I do not blame flowers and trees. It is just stating a fact, not a judgement.
Yes, some people use it as an excuse not to be around cats, but many people have animals even when they are allergic, and there is nothing wrong with them stating the fact that they are allergic to animals. There is no blame to be had anywhere.

Kitkat - 26 Mar 2004 14:21 GMT >Yes, some people use it as an excuse not to be around cats< Of course people use it as the reason to not be around cats. A friend of mine will end up in the ER if she is around cats because she simply can not breathe around them. Thats the reality...it has nothing to do with "blame".
Let's not forget the fact that cats have no idea we are claiming to be allergic to them, thus "blaming" them...so, im really not all that concerned. Im pretty darn sure my cats dont feel any sort of guilt from my "blaming" them for my allergies.

Cat Protector - 26 Mar 2004 20:42 GMT You would be surprised what cats can understand. Only human arrogance says that they can't possibly understand because the four legs and a tail.

Only human arrogance says >that they can't possibly understand because the four legs and a tail.< I am more than aware of what my cats understand. For the past 5+ years, I have provided food, shelter and love, unconditionally, regardless of my allergies. If it makes me arrogant to say that my cat doesnt feel blamed for my allergies, then so be it. The look of comfort in Luna's eyes is all I need to know.
Thanks anyway, Pam

The look of comfort in Luna's eyes is all I need to know. Exactly. Cats understand our emotions. If we say we are allergic to them but have no ill feelings toward them, then there is nothing bad for them to pick up.
My dog has no clue that she has the power to make me sick. She snuggles up next to me on the bed, and I hug her and pet her and tell her how wonderful she is. She knows I love her, and she honestly has no idea why I am blowing my nose in the morning, or washing the covers more frequently in spring.
Now, somebody who doesn't like cats. The cats will pick up on that easily. That's a much different situation. Meghan & the Zoo Crew Equine and Pet Photography http://www.zoocrewphoto.com

and most of the cases of cat allergies isn't to the "dander" it is to the saliva as it dries and flakes off.
Cat Protector - 26 Mar 2004 09:37 GMT This is a cat you are talking about. Not a plant.

Meghan Noecker - 26 Mar 2004 12:28 GMT >This is a cat you are talking about. Not a plant. Okay...so are we supposed to blame the plants when we are allergic to them? And also blame cat dander and cat saliva?
Or do we just accept the *fact* that we are allergic to ______ and be done with it.
I do not *blame* anybody or anything for my allergies. They exist.
I'm also allergic to metal and many lotions and soaps. I don't get mad at them either.

You can try to thoughtfully and logically explain the issue to him, or you can go outside and eat ground glass off the picnic table. Either one will be equally painful.
