Medical reasons for not purring?

Hi, first-time poster here. I adopted a 3-year-old cat about five
months ago and have been trying to figure out why he doesn't purr. He's
a very affectionate cat, doesn't seem at all traumatized. But he simply
doesn't purr. He does make a bit of a squeaky noise every now and
again, but it's not at all consistent. I'm wondering: Has anyone ever
heard of any medical reasons why cats don't purr? I'm afraid he may
have been injured before I adopted him ... Thanks!

Are you sure he doesn't purr or could it be very quiet.  My neighbor's
cat purred so loudly that I couldn't hear the TV, but Kami has a
"stealth puur."  I can't hear anything unless I put my ear to her body.

Some cats don't purr much.  That's all there is to it.  Individual
differences.

I can hear Cat Five's purring if the room is real quiet and she's snuggled
by my ear. There's a big tabby at the local flower shop where I helped out
delivering Valentines flowers, and he's real affectionate but we don't hear
him purr.  But if you rub under his neck you can feel the vibrations of
inaudible purring.  If you feel his neck right under his chin, do you feel
vibrations?
