Last year our 13 year old cat Buddy was put on prednisone for cholangioheptitis
and quickly became diabetic. We stopped the prednisone and he gradually
normalized, not requiring any insulin at all. After almost a year of steady
weight, and seemingly good health, his liver seems to be getting worse. His Alt
and Alp are up somewhat from last June, but the vet is particularly concerned
about his previously normal billirubin now at 1.0 (from .2 a year ago.) The vet
wants to put him back on prednisone, and we're very reluctant. We'd like to try
something else, maybe some natural anti inflammatory--we've been told dismutase
is very good. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on whether we should
take a chance Buddy having the same reaction to the prednisone as before. Or
maybe it's our only realistic course of action to get the liver disease back
under control. Thanks for any opinions. Susan C

Hi Susan,
We have our asthmatic cat on a natural cortisone we get through our vet and
it's working very well. If you're interested, you can email me and I can send
you more information.

The natural cortisone works the same way, i.e. bringing down inflammation. So
if prednisone helps IBD, I would imagine the natural cortisone would too. Best
to ask your vet though. Here's some more informaton on natural cortisone:
