I had the very great privilege of meeting Sam Corson (Pavlov's
last Ph.D. student) and his dogs at Ohio University.  I even got
to spend a night at Sam's house.  There is no question but that

knew that the dog's great capacity for love was the key to shaping

Paradoxical reward and paradoxical fixing of attention are both well

Come on I'm not here to argue because my spirit is gentle and today
is my day to fast. Yesterday at Church we had one of the best Church
Services I have ever been in.

I thank God this morning for the wonderful people in my Church. I love

Well my method is quite unconventional but it's
worked for me for years with a wide variety of species.

I bite back!

Works great with little pups since they are small
and still learning.

When they nip, grab them up real quick, and bite
the scruff of the neck like mom would... not hard,
just enough to get them to yelp a little.

Then a stern NO BITE and release them.

If they come back and do it again, bite harder.

Sounds silly and probably to some cruel but
it's exactly what their littermates and mother
would do and it's always worked for me.

That's a breed trait that you might likely never cure.  Shock collars
do work however and when used correctly, it won't hurt him.

Alternatively, you could use a citronella collar.  Same concept as
a shock collar, but instead of a shock, he'll get a burst of
citronella.

I am very glad to hear that the one on one training
classes are helping and I wouldn't worry much about

The back thing won't help him....give up on that one asap.
He sounds a little too over the top for that to work.  I
know it means more noise in your life...but what about time
outs in the crate.

He obviously does not like those.

Where is the crate now in your house?

When he's rotten to you, take the crate into another
room that you can't be seen from, crate him and close
the door.  Hell even put a stiff blanket over it.

Give him 15/30 minutes to settle down (or work himself
up from barking) and then bring him back out on leash
with a little bit of working like sit, down, stay and
treats for all.

Give him some nice attention like a belly rub
and continue on with what you were doing.

If he starts again, go back to step one in the crate.

Just remember, when he's not being bad but has to go
in the crate, move it back out to somewhere he can
see you and give him a little treat to go with.

Take ALL the toys and crap outta the crate and just
give him one at a time when he's good or just has to
go in there.  Rotate the toy collection.

OH...there's something constructive you can teach
him to do....get a small box and put all his toys
in it.  Teach him to clean up his toys....keep him
occupied by scattering them all over the place and
instructed him to get them one by one.

Just a couple of retarded thoughts!  lol

I don't believe in keeping them together as a habit either.

But I do have a few that are tolerant.  I just saw some
pictures of Virgil, who you likely know, living with some
younger dogs.

The bitch I mentioned earlier with the litter of pups got
loose while we were away and killed 2 younger dogs, so I
have been there like yourself.

I learned many years ago to do my best to not let things
like that happen and to not provoke any kind of bad interaction.

My oldest girl who will be 8 next Thursday is extremely dog
aggressive and yet my husband has no trouble walking a dog
through her space.  He also took her out to that Sportsmens'
Show I mentioned without an incident or bad move or image on
the breed from her.

So it can be done, with select dogs, even gamebred ones.

Most definitely Carolyn!!!  I get calls or emails a few
times a year from a new owner who can't understand why
their dog became that way and want it placed in rescue,
put down or to know how to get rid of the aggression.

I'm finding myself less tolerant these days and can't
help but reply with "You said you're dog is a "pit bull"
so what's the problem??  Did you not research the breed
before getting the dog?"

It is something that I believe CANNOT be trained OUT of
a dog...it can be controlled and like you and I personally
do..being an overtly responsible owner can solve alot of
problems before they arise.

Even the behaviourist I deal with on a rare occassion says
that.  But there's another....won't even suggest his name....
that believes it can and is charging people massive amounts
of money to "fix" their dog.  I can't help but wonder if it
can be trained out of other breeds.

And then there's people like Sue Sternberg who believe the
opposite of you and I...that animal aggressive dogs are just
too dangerous to be around people.  Far as I'm concerned..if
animal aggression is the major concern with this breed....

I'll take it!  For all the wonderful qualities of this breed...
that one just isn't a concern.

Having been on both sides of the rescue
fence, I see  both sides as well!

Just this year we took in a 2 yr old male.  He was
a beautiful dog, excellent with our family but a
touch leery of strangers (nothing serious) until
he was introduced.

One day hubby and I were out feeding and he decided
that hubby was the biggest enemy in the world!  Lunged,
teeth bared, growling, hackles up, barking...the whole
9 yards!

Good thing hubby was outside the kennel!!

That display right there was enough to make us make
the fatal decision.  I went in the kennel with him
not 5 minutes later and he was fine.  Hubby came in
and he was also fine.

He was not having a bad day, he was not protecting
his food (he was waiting for it as hubby had the
feed bucket).

       reinforcement" (1958) NEARLY EVERY LEARNING THEORY
       model involves the USE OF PUNISHMENT. Of curse,
       Skinner has never to my knowledge, demonstrated

He made a one way trip to the vet.  The prior
owner called shortly after and not really wanting
to share the news with her, I flubbed (bad me!)
But I did ask about the behaviour he showed that
day and she informed me THEN(instead of when she
brought him here!) that he is listed as a dangerous
dog in the next city because of a bad bite to
someone!!!!

Imagine that!!

Someone passing off their problem dog without the
real story to someone unsuspecting!  Were it not
for our experience with the breed, someone may
very well have gotten seriously hurt AGAIN from
this dog!!

And 2 yrs ago I put down my first CH bitch.  Saved
her from being poisoned, and just a few short months
later, her wiring went bad and she started lunging
at people.  People she knew and people she didn't.

I took her to the vet in tears with my youngest son
hugging her to have her put down.  Vet tried talking
me out of it, gave me options.

I gave him one!

Afterwards he said that he sees all too often the
family with a dog who bit after the bite has already
happened.

If only people would open their eyes to some of their
dogs' behaviour and take responsibility there would
be fewer bites.
