Cats and rubber mulch

Hi there,

I have 3 kitties at home and I recently built them an outdoor cat
enclosure (with a cat-door leading back inside my house).  They love the
enclosure, but two of my cats eat the grass growing inside the enclosure
- which makes them sick later.  So I'm thinking of getting rid of the
grass inside the enclosure.  I don't want it to just be mud & dirt
inside the enclosure, so I was thinking about putting down a thin layer
of a long-lasting shredded rubber mulch used on children's playgrounds
nowadays. "NuPlay" seems to be a popular one
(http://www.rubberificmulch.com/nuplay/).

Does anyone know if these products are safe for cats...or if cats will
tend to eat this type of mulch?

Thanks!

The grass is good for them, they need it, esp. if you don't give them
hairball medicine
and/or if they have long hair.

Several vets have told me that the grass I happen to have (Fescue) is not very
good for cats - especially if the kitties can't resist it and eat so much of
it that it makes them throw up regularly.  My 15 year old male won't keep any
food on his tummy if he is allowed to go out unsupervised in the enclosure of
fescue grass - it apparently tastes really good to him, but it causes him to
throw up all his food.

Forgetting for the moment about cats and grass eating, does anyone know if the
shreaded rubber mulch used around playground equipment is safe for cats?

Thanks!
Brad
