My cat has the vet dumbfounded.  She has these little bumps on the back of
her leg and she bites at them, causing open sores.  The vet shaved the cat's
leg and looked at the bumps and could not come up with a logical reason for
the bumps.  He wants to do a biopsy but I would like to try and avoid this.
He mentioned allergies may be a possible cause.  Has anyone had this type of
issue with their cat or have any ideas what may be causing this.  The vet
suggested we change to hypoallergenic food to try and rule out food
allergies.  But these bumps only appear on one leg.

My first thought was allergies, too.
Have you changed detergent or anything lately? Allergies aren't just
about food - any chemical in your home could cause a reaction. When did
she start this behavior? Can you think any anthing that changed from
before she started to after?
(perhaps she lays on that side a lot, so the exposure occurs there)

Also, does the cat go out? Flea bites can cause bumps, as can poison
ivy, poison oak, mites, mosquitos, and ticks.

How do you know that? Did the vet shave her whole body? Maybe only that
leg itches a lot. When you get mosquito bites, itching makes them worse.
So when you scratch, it injures the skin, which makes it itch more...

Another note: when I shave, I sometimes get little bumps from the
irritation. Are you certain the bumps weren't *caused* by the shaving?

Did the vet recommend a cortisone injection to see if it helped any
possible allergies?

If you drink, don't park. Accidents cause people.

Do you feed your cat on a regular basis, Chuck...? Just joshing...!!:)
Seriously though... It could be that she simply has a fetish for the
stank that comes from gnawing out pus-filled sores. That could be it
as well. Did you run that possibility by your vet yet?

I had a cat who had recurring bumps on his hind leg. The vet told me it was
"linear granuloma" and not serious but could develop into a rather painful and
unsightly situation. I was given medication for the cat and the granuloma went
away. It would reoccur and we would treat it again. The linear part just meant
that the bumps were in a line. There isn't much for the lay person on the web
but you may find something at this link.
