A friend feeds her cats both canned tuna and canned mackerel. Are there
any precautions she should take? - like mercury in tuna   How often to
feed canned fish? Would fresh be better? duh...
Maybe someone cam direct me to a website with more info on feline
nutrition.
TIA

I assume you are referring to "people" food.  If so, this is a bad idea.
These foods don't contain the proper nutrition for a cat - mainly not
enough taurine.  The cats would eventually go blind and die with such a
diet.  They should be fed only cat food.

Conversely, as a healthy part of a complete diet containing plenty of
taurine, deep water fish such as mackerel is an excellent source of
omega-3 essential fatty acids and as such makes a lovely snack or
training treat for the deserving kitty.

Bullcrap. Don't listen to this fraud. This is the same type of person
that cons you into believing that boys who exhibit signs of
masculinity have ADD (another PC liberal hoax). You'd do better to put
a life-or-death question to a fortune teller. Unbelievable.

After Iben's diatribe, you must know that what I stated was correct.

Cats need a varied diet that contains taurine, which is a vital nutrient
they can't make themselves. I wouldn't overfeed any one human-grade
food, especially canned tuna.
If the fish is a supplement to cat food, I wouldn't worry about a lack
of nutrients (I'd worry about too much mercury), but if this is a raw
food (BARF) diet, the cat will need more than just fish.

Cats go blind if they have no taurine in their diet. Kind of like humans
get diseases if they don't have certain nutrients, like iodine, in their
diet.
