Whale Rider Producers Cat Lovers?

I finally had the opportunity to see Whale Rider, the New Zealand
feature whose 11-year-old star was nominated for an Oscar.  I noticed
at least three scenes in which there was a cat.  Cats don't just
"happen" to show up on a set.  If they are in a shot, it's on purpose.
So, I was left with the question about whether the producer or director
was a cat lover or cats have a special place in Maori culture.  Hmmm...

Excellent movie, by the way.

It's interesting because I was watching some of the extras on the LOTR
extended version and there was some footage of Peter Jackson and crew were
scouting locations out in the boonies and there they are standing in the
forest that will eventually become the breakup of the fellowship and Peter
Jackson is cuddling this grey cat and kissing it! One of the other crew says
"From deer to cats". So I guess he just found this cat out there but it
couldn't have been too wild with him cuddling it and kissing it. I wonder
what that was about. I think New Zealanders must be fairly cat friendly
folk.

That's interesting.  I should ask my friend in NZ.  He's not Maori, but
might have an idea.

Could have used a few more subtitles of the Maori.  I can understand
the accent fairly well, but some of it was hybrid and I didn't catch
what they said.  I have a friend in NZ who calls me once every couple
of months so I've learned to understand him.  Theh eckseent eez veery
flet.  Almost like the only vowel is "e."  Worse than Oz.  :)
