Whenever Elwood is finished eating, he "buries" the leftovers by
digging at the ground around his dish.
This is probably done to try and hide the food from my other cat,
Jake.

Well, Jake just went to Elwood's dish, and "dug it up" before having a
taste.

Cats are so strange.

OK, THAT is funny. I've never had them share the imaginary jungle food.
I have had cats that did the bury thing (however, they were done, done
and never went back to it).
