I'm trying to remember - I switched the tubing (the set) either every bag or
every other bag.

I used one IV set per bag of fluids. When the bag was empty, I threw the
whole thing away (bag, IV set, etc.) I know other people have re-used the
IV set on another bag at least once or twice. But I never did. Just my
preference.

If you move the wheel lock on the drip set/venoset regularly and
remove any crimps, you can probably use it for a couple of bags.
However, there's contamination of the line to consider, and the older
it is and the more bags it has been used with, the greater the chance
that it'll become contaminated and thus contaminate the fluid bag. I
just use a fresh drip line with each bag of fluid- that way I don't
have to try to remember how many bags I've used the drip line with
before.

This also depends on the venoset - the quality of the tubing. The ones
made by Jorgensen Labs (brand name Jorvet) hardly crimp at all, while
the ones made by McGaw are bloody awful: the line crimps easily, and the
wheel lock is stiff and improperly graded, so that there is no flow
until you roll it all the way back to the end, at which point the flow
starts with a whoosh. (The only problem with the Jorvet sets is that
they drip at a slower rate, so the session takes longer.) My vet uses
the ones made by Baxter, which are also very good, except that they come
with an extra medication port, which puts the wheel lock too far away
from the needle end for my convenience.

I've heard of using a venoset for two bags, but not more.

Yep. We're talking pennies here. The risk isn't worth it.

I don't reuse venosets and I don't recommend resuing venosets. I use a
completely new setup for every treatment. Many renal cats have an impaired
immune system and susceptible to infections. The few dollars savings is
not worth the risk.
You don't have to buy venosets and fluids from your vet. You can buy all
the supplies by the case much cheaper either on the internet or at wholesale
from a distributor Depending on your State, you may need a prescription
for the needles.

Thanks for the replies. I will get a new venoset for each bag.
I did end up buying the fluids (rx needed) and needles (no rx needed) from
drsfosterandsmith. 1/4 the price than from the vet!! I'll get the next
venoset from the vet since I need one this week, then order some off the
web.
