just a question...I have recently joined this group, and found
cats.anecdotes the other day too. The same people are flooding both groups.
I assumed they were just doing it because they were bored, but references to
'mary' and references to apparent mistreating of people causing the levees
to be opened has me confused. I just asked some ordinary questions, so
everyone was nice. But I kinda figured that expressing strong opinions on
anything led you to be caused a troll. Regardless of whether you were or
not. So if some people have mistreated or offended other people, and this is
the result, what do those of us not involved (which I'm guessing is a lot of
people here) do about this? Just stay out of it and go on our merry little
way oblivious to the flame-war raging around us? Or join in the angst and
righteous anger? Hmmm....decisions decisions.

An astute observation, I would say. Mary is someone with strong opinions
and an acerbic sense of humor who, just as you do, posts under "nyms,"
primarily because it is the wisest thing to do in Usenet even if one's
opinions don't tend to piss people off. (But especially if you do.)

She thinks newsgroups are primarily for the exchange of information--
a view which is in direct opposition to those who use them to form
personal relationships. However, those who really do feel that these
synthetic cyber constructs are "communities" find people like Mary
threatening--precisely because people like Mary are posting for
different reasons and are of necessity not bound by the same rules
as those who are posting to make friends.

Mary has posted to this group for years and has proven herself to
be a cat lover. The only people who call her a troll are those who
call everyone they dislike a troll or who foolishly think that the use
of more than one nym is some sign of Demonic Guilt. :) More than one of
these people have since learned the hard way why a certain degree of anonymity
might be a positive thing. :)

Precisely. You my Aussie friend are smarter than the average bear.

Absolutely anything you want to including nothing. That is the beauty of a free
and unmoderated forum. Clearly there are ugly parts too.

You might find that when something is being done that you feel strongly
is wrong that you feel a moral imperative to speak out against it. Mary
clearly does. Those who tacitly allow wrong to be done sometimes find
that they are later held responsible for the said wrong, because silence
indicates agreement to many. But you may also feel that you don't know enough
about the situation to speak with authority. After all, opinions really are
like a.sholes, if only in that everyone has one.

You are a good egg, or appear to be. Hang around. The fun has just
begun.

Well, it is entertaining to watch. I feel sorry for mary. my sister is a bit
like that-very opinionated, and quick to jump in when she feels something is
'not right' which often gets her into trouble. I was thinking of telling her
to meet me here...maybe not. Mary sounds a bit too much like her. If this is
an 'unmoderated' group, how can people get kicked off just for having
differing opinions? So far the only person I've felt nettled by is the puupy
wizard. Although I didn't respond, just blocked. Which i figured was the
common sense thing to do. Anyway looks like you're all having fun; even the
supposedly offended people are feeding the trolls with glee-as if they want
them to hang around. I must admit, ordinary flaming is much more interesting
to watch than all this gibberish though.

It isn't just the jumping in.

One aspect is how one jumps in. Some people are tactful, others
aren't.

Another is whether one's opinion is politically correct.

The discussion groups are worldwide. Whether you can get kicked
off depends on your Internet service provider. RoadRunner (Road
Runner RR) is notorious for censoring their usenet users. It's an
exception.

That's naïve and a little hypocritical IMO.

The gibberish is from malicious trolls (whether or not grudging),
and in fact it is rare. It has no purpose except obstruction and
they should be denied service IMO.

Those aren't the only choices.
