Has anyone been satisfied with toilet training of cats?

I posted earlier about training my two 7 month old kitties to use the
commode.  The overwhelming response was to discourage it.   I am now
in agreement with this opinion and I will continue them with the
litter box.  However, my curiosity remains.   Has anyone tried this
and found that it was a reasonable, even satisfying experience??

It worked well for my cats for a couple of years.  Then the male
developed a problem with constipation, and having to use the toilet
while in that condition was difficult.  I could have kept the female
using the toilet, but there was no point having one using litter and
the other the toilet.  There were pluses and minuses, but it was nice
not having to pay for litter!
