I noticed someone had put out by the garbage one of those 'cat furniture'
things, where you have basically a structure covered in what looks like rug
carpet for the cat to play on.

Well, I have two cats and I thought that would be nice to pick up and maybe
my couch will last a little bit longer if they had something else to claw
on. So I grabbed it and have it in my car now.

But I got to thinking that this is a used piece of cat furniture, and I
wondered if it was dangerous in any way. How likely is it that it could have
some kind of cat disease on it, or whatever. I have no idea about these
things, so just thought I put it up on one of these 'catboards' to see if I
could benefit from the experience of others who know a lot more about cats
and their possible diseases that can come from other cats.

thanks,
dg

I don't think you'd have to worry about disease too much. Vacuum it off
really well. You could spritz it down with a carpet cleaner and vacuum that
off too.

Depending on where you live, you might also want to treat it for
parasites, such as fleas, before bringing it in.
Other than that, spray it with disinfectant of 1 part bleach to 3 parts
water. There are some viruses and bacteria that can live on carpet for
awhile. That's just a bit of paranoia on my part, though. Most likely
there isn't a thing wrong with it.

That's a good idea. Hadn't thought about fleas etc.  But I bet its OK too. I
have disposed of trees this way as well or donated them to kitty charity
sales. I have one now I'm thinking about losing. You see, I've no tools to
recarpet and I figure it's just as cheap to buy a new one as to spend time
refurbishing. Others, have time and skills to make the old new. Chances are
its fine.

I agree. I didn't think about fleas, either. The only thing I thought about was
ringworm. The OP could put a bleach solution in a hand-held carpet machine and
after that, I think it would be fine.

I am designing a cat tree for my two cats and having a friend who is an
interior designer/decorator build it. I'll post pictures when it is built.

You might want to give it a good sniffing and check it out with a
black light. Maybe it was thrown out because it got sprayed.
The scent of another cat's spray on it could upset your cats.

Tear the carpet off and throw it out.

Run around to the carpet stores in your area and pickup enough scraps to
recovery the structure and you are good to go.

I would not trust the old carpet, who knows what has been on it that may
disrupt your household.

Would you worry about getting some weird disease from picking up a sofa from
the garbage?

Spray it for fleas and make sure it doesn't smell horrible.

Might want to also put some flea killer type things on it for a wile just in case as well.

But always remember that you're only supposed to have carpeting on the places the cats site, not on
the parts they scratch.  Twine or rope wrapped around the scratching parts is much better and safer
for the cats.  Pieces of carpet fibers can get off and get stuck by the cat's claws and irritate
them.
