Hi there,

I have a 7-month old semi-feral that I've been fostering.  Antonio has come
around a lot in the past 2 months I've had him.  He sits near me, even gets
on my lap once in a while.  Recently, like the past week or two, he has
started eating everything!  He eats mashed potatoes, rice, lettuce, and even
yesterday, he pulled a muffin paper (you know, the bakery paper around the
bottom of a muffin) out of the trash and started eating it!  I know this can
be a symptom of hyperthyroidism, but is that possible in such a young cat?
He's a real food hound, too.  Begs for lunchmeat and gets so excited when
it's canned food time.  Could it just be a leftover behavior from being
feral?

Thanks

My cat Jade is somewhat like that. She eats well and has no problem for
special treats in between. Some cats just like to eat. Just make sure they
get exercise as well to balance it out.

I can't get Bonnie (formal feral) to eat canned food, but she does like
to eat. She only likes dry food so I give her premium quality (yeesh, SD
Sensitive Skin, though I'd rather try to get a DermCap into her and feed
her food with actual meat in it).  She had some food issues once I tried
to get her on canned food, but she over-groomed from stress because I
wouldn't give her what she wanted.  I gave up for now and she doesn't
pull her fur out anymore. She's awful flakey though, and the SD is
helping with that.  Even though her issues aren't the same as Antonio's
issues, it sure seems that former ferals could have food-related
problems. Hopefully just for a short while. :)

Our 3 house cats get *very* excited when they hear a can opening.  They
also eat pringles, sweet 'n' sour Chinese, rice and yes, they like to
lick/eat muffin papers.  I think they like the different textures as much
as the different flavours.

Just keep an eye on what they eat. Human food isn't good for cats.
Actually (and I would like other opinions on that because my information
isn't necessarily correct), some things, such as cheese, can be very
dangerous for pets.

Yes, I also have a cat that eats everything. She ate a Kiwi fruit partly
once and got an allergic reaction.
I think it is possible that a young cat can hyperthyroidism. Many human
chhildren can have it at a young age.

One of mine, Bear, is insane with regards to food, he'll eat anything,
muffins (and wrappers) are a favorite.

Another one, Naula, has managed to open hard plastic muffin packages,
and always tears into baked goods of any sort (Hotdog buns and bread are
what the kids leave out most often)

Mine have been with us since 8-9 weeks, and have never lived anything
other then the life of luxury, and in all cases they've had fresh
(within 12 hours) dry food available, and were fed wet food on schedule
(when they were younger, a few times a day, now we're down to twice a
day, plus tender viddles whenever I feel like it or when they beg)

Politicians, like diapers, have to be changed frequently,
and for the very same reason.

Thanks everyone for your responses.  I've never had a cat go after foods
other than meat, except for when my Dash had hyperthyroid.  So, I see it's
not an unusual thing for cats to like starchy foods.  I guess Antonio just
started doing it because he's more comfortable with us now.  He doesn't feel
threatened by the humans and thinks it's OK to walk up to their plate and
steal mashed potatoes!  Well, I'll have to correct this behavior since I'm
fostering him and trying to get him ready for a forever home :)

Our two cats are quite healthy and have some strange food preferences.

One likes broccoli (cooked, soft).  I thought it was moreso the butter
on the plate that she was enjoying licking off when I saw her go at it
one day but since then have experimented and discovered she will eat
the soft parts plain and unseasoned.

This one also loves yogurt.

Her sister likes mung beans and potato chips and cheetos.  This crazy
one will take a few licks of hot, spicy salsa even!

They both love to drink the water that comes out of the can when we
drain tuna fish.  They also both love cheddar cheese.

They get tiny tidbits of whatever we eat, not on a daily basis and in
"just a taste" amounts.

But nothing ever seems to disagree with them.  They have dry food in
the morning and wet food at night.  Seldom throw up hairballs.

They like almost all of the various Science Diet dry food products
(Sensitive Stomach, Oral Care, HairBall Remedy, Sensitive Skin).  They
like Kit N Kaboodles and Whiskas dry food, too.  They do not like IAMS
or Purina.

Canned food, mostly all Whiskas are acceptable.

They do get fed a variety of different flavors and seem to thrive on
this.  They are now going on seven years old.
