Steroids and Shadow

Posting continuously helped me before to deal with Shadow so either don't
read this or just understand.  :)  It's been a week and a half since
changing Shadow over to EOD prednisone, 10mg.  He has been on 5mg daily
since I couldn't ween him down any further due to his IBD. He got
horribly nauseous when messing with the pred.  After the recent thread
about Cushings, and his recent *good* blood work results, I knew it was
time to go EOD if he could deal with it.  He's been doing very well.  He
still has chronic diarrhea but that was never helped with the pred, only
the nausea. Since he is isolated from the meanies during the day, I can
tell the diarrhea is probably once or twice a day so it isn't voluminous,
but it does seem to cause some pain while he "goes"... I imagine cramps.
Once he's done, he is fine.  If only I could find the trigger, but I
suspect his poor intestines are pretty shot.  I know the fight in him and
he is mostly happy when he's not being picked on, and even that doesn't
seem to stress him most of the time because he sometimes taunts the
meanies. He just all of a sudden gets scared and runs rather than play
back, he certainly sends out signals that he is playing. He has a great
appetite, and I've noticed on the "off" pred day he eats well but not as
much as the "on" pred day.  That's fine; he eats way too much if he can,
and begs and hunts down Bonnie's dry food. I let him have some of it if
she leaves only a few pieces of her dry in her bowl (bowls are washed
daily here!) He even plays with toys (chase type games with Da Bird) and
forgets for a while that he is afraid of the meanies, and they look at
him wierd when he runs around in front of them as if he doesn't see them.
Belly wobbling. Then he notices them and runs to his safe place.  His
only real maintenance problems are his eyes.. they run for some reason.
His ears are better with (I think) the B complex, and his anal glands and
poop sticking to his butt (which is shaved bare again) and the vet takes
care of his anal glands.

I just worry about this cat.  He is a good bud. You'd have to see how he
acts with me to know what I'm talking about. He loves my singing. He
doesn't wake me up in the morning even though he is not free-fed and the
steroids make him hungry all the time; he just jumps on the bed around
wakeup time and steps on my hair to wake me up. If that doesn't work he
scratches the mattress, and he doesn't scratch any other furniture, so
this is to wake me up.  lol  When I say "5 more minutes" he lays next to
me and purrs.  When I cry, he comes to headbutt me from wherever he is.
Not sure how he knows, but he does.

Awww. Shadow is such a trooper, and such a grand old cat. And you deserve and
award for the awesome way you've cared for him. But I guess every day with
Shadow is that reward :-)

I'm starting to stress this coming summer when I'm going to be able to
take a vacation; first since he got sick. My mom said she'll stay at my
house while I'm away but he's on so many things. When I made reservations
last summer I honestly didn't know how he'd be by then. I even thought he
would pass. I'm happy to see him doing so well. I think the thought of
him being FeLV+ was going to be a quick demise for him with his other
problems but he is doing so well!  :)  I'll have to talk to his vet and
let her know when I'm going away but she doesn't know about some of the
"homeopathic" remedies I'm giving him. Nothing drastic, but probably some
things she'd laugh at.
Wendy - 25 Feb 2004 12:17 GMT
I wouldn't worry about the vet laughing. Let them know what he's on just in
case it might interact with something else.

I know what you mean about stressing over vacation. Try not to stress now.
Wait until it's closer to the time and you can stress (or not) then
depending on how Shadow is doing.

Your Mom sounds like a real peach. Can I borrow her when we go on vacation?
lol

Awww, what a sweetie :)  I hope the EOD pred works out for Shadow.  That boy
deserves a break.  Just wish you could figure out what's causing the diarrhea.
I know that has to be very frustrating.

Sending lots of healing glow to you and Shadow from me and Mickey & Meesha.

Hugs,
Lauren

Thanks Lauren.  I don't know how he doesn't miss the litterbox but he
always makes it.  Sometimes when he gets chased by the meanies I keep
expecting to see him lose his bowels, but he doesn't.  I guess that means
it isn't as bad as I think?  When I bring up the diarrhea with his vet,
she just says as long as he doesn't seem to be in distress, he is ok and
it isn't "time" yet. I just don't want him to be in pain.

Thanks Annie, and everyone.

I think it was Hailey who had concerns about the "homeopathic" remedies I
give him, and I should run them by the vet. I probably will but I've
checked for interference with his two prescribed medications and there
aren't any. They are more like amino acids, or EFAs, vitamins and one
herbal. Slippery elm, B complex, Salmon oil and L-glutamine. I've done a
lot of research on this stuff and while I haven't consulted a homeopathic
vet, if I read about something else that might help, I probably will.

Cheryl I am amazed by your strenght to hang in there and with Shadows
fighting - sounds like your made for each other.

Karryl thanks, he is actually doing well for the most part. Fighting is a
good word. He fought for his life nearly two years ago and he is still a
fighter now. There is something about the bond when you spend every waking
second trying to help save the life of your loved ones (if it is to be).  I
do have that bond with Shadow. He is as close to my heart as any human. I
will let him go when his time comes. I hope no one worries about that.

I don't think anybody worries that you won't let Shadow go when it is
his time. It has been very clear throughout his ordeals that you love
him and are very tuned to his needs; he's clearly a very special cat
to you.
