our inside/outside kitty turned up with a limp.  the vet diagnosed a
sprain and a fever (no sign of abcess despite fever). we're now keeping
inside until the leg is better.

we stopped the antibiotic per the vet, because his appetite was nearly
zero for three days.  also no bowel movement for three days.  vet says
not to worry about the bowel movement.  expects it to start when he
starts eating again.

in over a year, he has used a litter box to urinate only twice.  he has
never had a bowel movement inside.  perhaps his preference for outside
is causing him to hold it.  or maybe he isn't eating enough.

he now is nibbling a bit on food.  but it has been over four days
without a bowel movement.  the vet says not to worry but i'd like some
opinions from the group (we've never had pets or vets).

If he is used to the outside  maybe put some dirt and grass in the box to
encourage its use.

The vet is a professional and much more highly trained that almost
anyone in this group. That said, even vets give poor advice on
occation so you are right to be monitoring this issue.

I too, would worry about no movement in four days, that is quite a
while. It is not a terrible amount of time, but is a worry. Output is
closely related to input, no food going in yields no movement coming
out. The cat needs to eat more than the nibbling that you describe.
Perhaps some canned food, or different flavors, or warming it up a bit
would help.

I have found fancy feast to be helpful in such cases. I have also
found that paying a lot of attention to the cat by petting it can
encourge it to eat. Perhaps petting the cat for a while and have a
dish of slightly warmed food right next to him/her.

I have resorted to human grade tuna steak in extreme cases. Even then,
I have felt a little guilt in eating the leftovers, LOL.

As for the litterbox, I have seen suggestions of putting some plain
old dirt in the litterbox, along with the litter. This will allow the
outdoor cats to feel more at home. I have no experience with this, I
am just passing it along.

i've been getting him to take little bits of turkey out of my hand, but
hardly a meal's worth.  he nibbles a bit from his science diet, which is
him overall preference.

we do have a three boxes of dirt in addition to the two boxes of kitty
litter.  he's pretty 'rich' in the litter box department.

If he hasn't been eating he has nothing (or next to nothing) to eliminate.
If you can't entice him to eat with Fancy Feast or other warmed food,
another call to the vet might be in order. They can prescribe something that
could jump start the appetite again.

Is he drinking and urinating properly? He may be fighting off some
mild infection (fever). It can be a mild virus so he only needs time
to heal. We don´t like to eat when we´re sick either. Either way, keep
offering him different foods. If you feel he is getting worse, get a
second opinion.
