I just found your group...hoping someone
might be able to help me solve this problem....
..
I have a little solid black short hair female
cat about 5 or 6 years old now...she strayed here as a tiny kitten...
..
This has never happened before a short
time ago, but now her hair / fur is becoming "matted", and  impossible
to
brush/come out...her hair is so thick now
that you can't part it to see the skin....
..
What grooming tool, or what else can
be done, short of trying to cut all of these
places out of her coat... in the 5 or so
years I've had her, this has never happened before....I brush or comb
her
out or try to, every day or at least 3 times
a week.. she stays with another tabby
orange cat we have, and the other ones
coat does not do this....please send any
helpful suggestions in email as I do not
have time to read groups much...
Thanks so much for any help I may be
given....
Regards......

Some cats mat easier than others.
For her sake and the sake of your still unscratched skin, take her to a
groomers where they can shave her if necessary. Once matting is bad
enough, shaving is the only solution. Then, be more vigilant in the
future. Mats don't happen overnight. Have the groomer show you the best
way to comb her so she doesn't get more mats.
Also, have her checked by a vet. If this just started happening, either
you changed the grooming (type, schedule, etc) or something's (possibly)
up with her. She might not feel well and is grooming herself less. Or,
she could be not getting enough oils, making her fur dry and easily
matted. She even could have gotten into a sticky sustance such as tree
sap if she goes outside.

Good luck!
