I have a 12 years old, male, American Shorthair,
He has been diagnosed with toxoplasmosis parasite infection.
http://web.vet.cornell.edu/Public/FHC/toxo.html
Right now he's is undergoing a treatment consisting of 50mg of
clindamycin twice daily. He has been taking the medicine for the last
3 days. So far there is no real improvement in his condition.
He still is showing all the symptoms.
Has anybody any experience with this infection?
How long is the recovery period?
Are there any health problems that result from the infection?
If anybody has any information and advice on how they dealt with this
infection I will be grateful for what you can give me.
I have no idea what to expect so any info is great.

From the people who have posted on this here before, it seems to take some
time to get over and it seems to me, some animals never get rid of some of
the symptoms (like I recall one whose cats head was held tilted.) Good luck.
Hopefully you will get some more responses and you might also as at

How was he diagnosed? Do you remember which test your vet used? Its very
important. The ELISA serum IgM Toxo antibody titer is about the best
serologic test for diagnosng active or recent infections. The IgG titer
doen't distinguish a previous infection from a current active infection
unless paired samples are run in the same test on the same day over 2-3
weeks. IOW, even though a cat has a positive IgG titer and symptoms of
Toxo, the cat may not have an active Toxo infection and the symptoms could
be caused by some other underlying, undiagosed disease. A lack of response
to clindamycin could be an indication of some other disease.

Does he have ocular symptoms - Uveitis (iridocyclitis, chorioretinitis)?
Toxo is often an opportunistic disease associated with immunosuppression.
Has your vet run test to search for underlying predisposing factors (e.g.,
FeLV, FIV)?

This link will provide you with a wealth of information about Toxo.
It was written by J.P. Dubey, the leading microbiologist at the Zoonotic

What are the symptoms for a cat with toxoplasmosis. I'm just curious. I had
to take clindamycian for a urinary tract infection during my pregnancy it
took two weeks of the medication before it went away.

The symptoms are non-discript not eating, sleeping to much, fever,
things like that, but they come down with it fast and just aren't
themselves. The symptoms can be mild though so many cats who get this
their owners never realise anything was wrong. They should recover from
it even without meds but medication certainly helps. Once a cat has it
he can't get it again. Just make sure you wash your hands well after
changing his litter box.
All this is from memory, I'd do a search for it there's info out there.
