Third Eyelid

I have a question for you all. Re: The third eyelid.
I had a stray jump up on the window two weeks ago. She was malnourished and
wormy, but negative for FeLV/FIV, had no fever and vet says the bloodwork
didn''t indicate any illness. Her eyes were otherwise clear.  I almost argued
with  him, because every cat I ever had with the 3rd lid showing turned out to
be SICK.
Anyway. The third eyelid isn't showing anymore. She *seems* fine and has put on
a little weight, her coat is looking better.
Q. Do you all think the worms/lack of nutrition caused the 3rd eyelid thing?
I am just so paranoid about spreading disease to the other cats. The more I
read this newsgroup, the more I realize there are probably too many various cat
viral infections/communicable diseases to count.
Q. What would you all consider the "magic number" to keep her isolated to
ensure she is healthy. Integrating her isn't a problem, my boys don't get too
worked up over newcomers.
Thanks all
Sherry

Some times the third eyelid protrudes when the cat has lost weight, or is
dehydrated.  Since it resolved after she gained`weight, and the vet gave her
a clean bill of health, I'd `keep an eye on it, but I wouldn't worry.

Sherry, if her FeLV/FIV ELISAs, blood, and fecals (for parasites) came back
neg., There's no reason I can think of for not beginning the introduction
process.

Good luck,

Phil

Dehydration does it, too. And, apparently, LUUUUUV. :-)

Probably dehydration.

You said she's gotten a clean bill of health from the vet, right? I'd
get started. :-)

I would HIGHLY suspect URI - maybe you just caught her at the tail end
of it...?

Thanks, Phil, Laura, Lyn. I never thought about dehydration. We spotted her on
the windowsill looking in two weeks ago in the middle of a freezing rain...she
was just starved, and matted so bad they had to shave her sides. After 2 weeks,
she is already less bony and her coat looks better. Here's a pic of her right
when we brought her in, and one a couple days later after she got shaved and
cleaned up some. She's really got an unusual coat pattern. She's a real lap cat
too.

Aww, thanks Laura. The long hair is kind of deceiving...she is really
dreadfully bony and pretty ugly with her sides shaved. I just love her though.
I'm going to keep her. We only have 3 cats, one more won't make much
difference. DH keeps asking when I'm taking her to the shelter, and I just go
"Oh, let's wait till her coat grows back out, nobody would pick her looking
like that." I figure that story ought to be good for at least a month, then
he'll be attached to her by then.
I feel kinda bad about being so conniving, wait, no I guess I don't. Am I bad?.

Nope. And if DH won't keep her, you can send her to me. :-) (But I
think he'll cave. <G>)

Have you named her yet?

Yeah, her name is Biskit. She jumped up on the window that night while we were
wattching Seabiscuit. And also because she kneads *everything* all tthe time.
When the vet picked her up, he said, "Oh, look. She's making biscuits."

She is neat looking! But what are those little bumps on her back leg?
Hopefully just matted fur?

I just looked again at the pic. I don't know what that is. Maybe a leaf or
something stuck to her leg. Anyway, it's just something in the picture. Thanks
for compliment! I think her little mask is so cute.

Oh good, I was concerned it was something like linear granuloma.

She is a precious girl and so lucky to have found you.

That's part of the carpeting, not the cat. I did a double-take, too.

Best of luck to you and your new one, Sherry!

I also have a stray right now with third eyelids showing.  He has been
here about a week and a half, and was severely dehydrated and starved
when I brought him in.  He no longer appears to be dehydrated, and
seems to be settled down to eating a regular amount, but the third
eyelids are still showing.  :-(  A friend sent me some Advantage, so I
was able to de-flea him, but I can't afford a vet visit to get the
little guy tested or a Droncit for the worms I'm also certain he has.
He has a date to go into the shelter in two weeks.  I'm going to see
if I can talk my vet out of a Droncit and see if that clears up the
third eyelid thing, since I've read that is another thing that can
cause it.  Crossing my fingers!

Ohhh, poor kitty. Where did you find him? Biskit *still* isn't eating right.
She gobbles food like it's going to disappear.

I rescued my Betsy almost five years ago and she still has a tendancy to
gobble food.  I used to free feed my other cat, but can not since Betsy's
arrival.

I put food and water out for any strays/ferals in the neighborhood.
Luckily, he wasn't as skittish as some, and when he showed up for
dinner, I managed to get him to come over to me (after about 10
minutes of freezing my *** off!).  Unfortunately, there are still two
other cats out there.  Sigh.  But I have to get little Alex taken care
of first.  He's such a sweetheart.  He's stopped gobbling, and now he
eats mostly when one of us is in there with him (I think we aren't in
there enough, and he's very social and misses company when we aren't
there).  Although he gets *really* excited and waits by the spot where
I put down the dish when he gets his canned food at night, and gobbles
*that* down (first time I tried to give him canned food, he looked at
it like "What the heck is *that*?).  Anyway, hopefully Biskit will
realize soon she doesn't have to worry about a food source anymore :-)

That's where I was really lucky. Biskit wasn't hard to catch at all. I still
can't imagine where she came from. We don't have houses close to us at all. She
almost had to have been dumped here.
