Please help. My male cat has had a urinary tract infection since last
September. The vet has treated him with Baytril and Clavamax. neither
has cleared it up. I am pretty upset with the treatment he has
received because I don't the doctor has been agressive enough. last
week after another urinalysis, the vet said to just continue him on
the baytril. I refused and brought him to the office for further
treatment options. This was last Friday. he was kept overnight and
given x rays and further urinalysis to grow a culture to see just
what is going on. This is Tuesday Night and I have yet to be called
back with the results. The vet is usually very poor about returning
phone calls and I only get to talk to the office help.
What should I do? By now, I have no faith in the vet or his concern
for animals. I'm scared for my cat. how long does it take to grow a
culture?
Thanks for listening. Please offer advice

Did your vet suggest changing food type to canned or changing to a special
diet designed for this? Assuming your vet diagnosed the type of crystal by
examining it in the microscope - did you determine if the crystals were
struvite or calcium oxalate? What were you feeding the cat prior to the
infection?

My cat eats only dry food: 3 kinds: dental diet, hairball diet, and
urinary tract diet. he drinks distilled water. don't know about
crystals because I don't know if they were ever addressed. When i take
in a urine sample I hear that there is still bacteria and blood in the
urine. Just continue the baytril this is wednesday--x rays and a
culture were done last Friday or Saturday morning. The vet has not
called me back. I will robably take him elsewhere but we live in a
small town and I don't have many options. I will probably have to take
him to the nearest big city. anyone know a top notch vet in Buffalo,
Ny?

I would definitely switch him to a high quality canned food. You may have to
first start the switch slowly if he's reluctant to eat the wet, by moistening
the dry food until he gets used to the wet consistency. Then slowly add some
canned to the moistened dry food, until you eventually have all canned food.
Here's a very good article on dry cat food:

I don't think you want to give a cat distilled water. Do a Google search
on it, but here's a sample:

Crystals can irritate, inflame and actually cut into the bladder/urethra and
cause hematuria.
I can't imagine how a vet could examine urine for bacteria and not see
crystals in the sample if any were present.... Although after reading about
the gross incompetence of some vets reported by a few posters, I guess its
possible.... :-/
When i take
> in a urine sample I hear that there is still bacteria
The samples may be contaminated. Urine samples that will be examined for
bacteria and cultured should be obtained via cystocentesis (directly from
the bladder) to avoid contamination with bacteria that normally inhabit the
distal urinary tract.
and blood in the
> urine.
Bleeding is usually caused by mucosal inflammation/irritation from
crystals/calculi, or from tearing the bladder mucosa from straining to
urinate or from overdistention of the bladder --particularly in males cats
with urethral obstruction.
Cats with interstitial cystitis often have hematuria because they frequently
strain to urinate. The inflammation associated with IC causes a nervous
sensation that mimics the sensation that's normally caused by a full
bladder. The nervous impulses that control urination are repeatedly
stimulated so that the urge to urinate is constant whether the bladder is
full or empty
What about WBCs? Did your vet find WBCs in the urine along with the
bacteria?
What are`the symptoms other than hematuria?

Mcduffy has twice had urine taken directly from him. Crystals have
never been mentioned. Just bacteria and blood. I will call tomorrow to
ask about crystals being eing present. Also, thanks to this group, I
went out and bought huge quantities of Wellness food. It should be
interesting to wean him over to wet food. He's a stubborn cuss. There
are no other apparent symptoms. After the initial straining to urinate
6 mos. ago, he seems fine. Just the blood and bacteria reported in his
urine by the vet. He is still on an antibiotic--CHPC. If you don't
mind--what are WBCs? thank you.

If you have lost confidence in your vet, you may want to take your cat to
another vet for a second opinion.

There is a stronger antibiotic called zeniquan or zeniquin. It has
worked well for Jacob's UTIs, for which he needed the extra-potent
antibiotic. The fact that your vet is culturing the urine is actually
good, as it can help in the choice of antibiotic.

I'm sorry to hear about your cat. I hope the vet has suggested a diet change
for your cat and hopefully to feed a canned food instead of dry food.

Hi
My cat had a UTI every year since he was 6 years old (he died at 14.5
years old). He had been seen by 7 different vets, had his urine
tested, blood tested, bladder x-rayed, and none of them could find the
cause. After all that, I just had to manage his symptoms, and give up
on trying to identify and prevent the cause. In the end I stopped
taking him to the vet, and just arranged to pick up his pills each
time he started peeing blood :-)
Are the antibiotics being stopped and started - ie a week or two of
treatment, then the UTI comes back, so you start on the pills again?
I found that 1-3 weeks of antibiotics didnt work and the UTI returned
quickly, but an extended treatment of 6 weeks straight would clear the
UTI up (at least for 12 months). Canned food made no difference as it
gave him the runs, and did not prevent the return of the UTI.
Changing from dry to wet foods is usually only useful if the cause is
crystals (which it doesnt sound like it is).
Good luck.

My thanks to everyone for the excellent suggestions. McDuffy is now
onCHPC an antibiotic that he hasn't had before. I will definitely
change his diet to wet food. Wellness brand has been recommended as
has a regular schedulle of feeding, and more frequentchanges of litter
boxes, and just plain more litter boxes. Also, acourse of treatment
has been mentioned--cosequin??.
I live in a small town, in the middle of nowhere, so it will take some
time to order everything but I really look forward to making these
changes for the good of McDuffy and his other 5 friends. I know I'll
have healthier, and happier cats. If anyone else has anything else to
offer, you don't know how much I appreciate the advice. Thank you.
