Grass Seed?

I want to plant a rather large planter of grass for my indoor-only
cats. I want to get something that they can chew on and it will continue
to grow. Wheat grass doesn't work so well from what I've seen from those
"cat grass" things you can buy in pet stores.

I was thinking of getting a bag of actual lawn grass, but can't decide
what kind to buy. I'd like something that grows tall and does well in
partial shade. Most importantly I want something that will be safe for
the kitties.

Any suggestions.

I grow wheat grass for my cats.  I buy whole grain wheat by Arrowhead Mills
available at most any healthy food store.   It looks like rice in a bag.  The
key to growing it is to soak the dirt in water first.  I put some dirt in a
bowl, run a trickle of water on it until it's very very wet.  Then let stand 5
minutes, and then drain off the excess water.  Get a shallow container (I use
those clear plastic things you put underneath a potted plant.  I punch some
holes in it for drainage.  Then put about an inch and half of the wet dirt.
Then put a couple tablespoons of the wheat grains on top, then cover with just
enough of the potting soil to cover the wheat grains (about 1/4 inch or so).
Put this in another dish for drainage.  It should start sprouting in about 3 or
4 days.  Once it starts sprouting, water it well.  That's all there is to it.
Should last a couple weeks.  I find putting it in the fridge at night helps it
last longer.  I've been giving this to my cats for 4 years now and they love
it.
