SHE IS LICKING HERSELF TO DEATH!!!

We have a fat Himalayan named Smokey (her nickname is Fat Bitch Smoke
because she has a major attitude).  In the past several months, she has
developed a nervous habit of licking herself so much that sores have
appeared (only on her fat tummy).  We tried to curb it and get it to heel
(heal) by putting a "satellite dish" around her neck.  This worked for a
little while and the sores started to heel (or heal).  But the collar wasn't
wide enough and she was able to position her fat a.s so she could still
reach her tummy and the sores reappeared.  Not only that, but because she
wrenched herself and the collar so much as to reach her tummy, she rubbed
her ear raw with the collar.  We took the collar off since it wasn't doing
any good.  We haven't tried much else and she is still aggravating the sores
on her tummy and her ear.

Does any one know how  I can get her to stop?  If I get her to stop long
enough to get the sores heeled (or healed), will she just start up again and
create new sores?

Thank you for any help anyone can offer,

Conan Kelly

This is often caused by an OCD disorder. It is best solved by a trip to
the vet to rule out physical causes such as allergies, then possibly
getting her some tranquilizers, behavior modification, and removing any
stressors from the environment.

And if she is just prevented from doing it until they heal, yes, she
will start again. It could be OCD or it could be allergies, skin
disease, etc.
Ask your vet.

I have a cat who licks himself to the point he bleeds but he has allergies,
and is on yet another treatment plan to try to relieve it. Other reasons
could be that something hurts and even if she isn't licking where it hurts,
it could be she is just licking where she can reach. Maybe her lil tummy
hurts, or she has some pain there, or there abouts.  I've read another
poster who wrote that her cat has chronic cystitis (IIRC) and licks her
tummy when it is flaring up. I'd say it's time for a vet to investigate.

PS - I've never had luck with the e-collar on my itchy cat. I've tried it
during times when I had to clean it up and apply a triple antibiotic
between vet visits, just to keep him from licking the med off.  He would
walk backwards, bang into things or else just sit there all depressed and
not look me in the eye when I made him wear it. Now if I have to do all
that I do it at feeding time so that eating dinner takes his mind off of
the gunk on his skin long enough for it to start helping a little before he
licks it off.

She needs to be diagnosed and treated by a Vet.
