I had to share my amazement....

Some of you may remember me and my sweeties, Gustav and Aurora.  I usually
lurk, (and have been a lurker for almost 4 years here) but wanted to post after
what I witnessed tonight!

I was walking down the hallway and past my bathroom when I caught a glimpse of
Gustav out of the corner of my eye.  He was in my bathroom, on the toilet,
squatting over the bowl, urinating.  I couldn't believe it!!!  I still don't as
I sit here and type this...  I understand that some people train their kitties
to use a human toilet, but I certainly did not teach Gustav this behavior.  I
also want to make clear that I scoop their boxes (3 boxes for 2 kitties) twice
a day.  Believe me, I keep them clean.

Has anybody else ever had a cat just use a toilet out of the blue?  I'm
thinking I should probably discourage this by keeping the lid down because I
would hate for him to fall in...  I wouldn't think it's very likely that he'd
hurt himself, but he's a very proud boy and wouldn't want to be humiliated by
slipping into the bowl.

Wow...  My Gustav never ceases to impress me.  Ever.
Back into lurk mode.....  :)

Oh wow I have heard of kitties doing that but I never saw one do it!

Sadly my Charley loves to use the WC... in a quite different manner.
No matter how much fresh water I put in their (three) drinking bowls,
he prefers the "well". The only thing I can do is never to have
anything like loofreshener hanging in there and pray all the time
everyone not to forget to close the lid. Whenever someone forgets, hes
in there slurping. I dont want him drinking there. Definetely after
him falling in once years ago...

Actually if I were you I would close the lid. Nothing happened back
then other than he got as wet as angry, but it still gives me the
shivers to think of what could have happened. This way round he could
very easily have got stuck in that hole with his head down :/

with purrs,

Alex

You are very lucky to have a cat that smart!

I wish ours would do that too, it would certainly make the cat-tray
cleaning easier!

Yea, that's true it would make an incredible photo!

I remember there was a Hollywood film (a guy wants to wed a girl but
her dad is ex-CIA and VERY paranoid and wants to check the guy out -
quite a funny film) recently released which showed a scene of a cat
using a toilet and then pulling the plug. One of these 'actor cats', I
suppose!

Could be if you took enough photos then it would 'embarrass' him and
he would stop doing it?

Christina,

When I saw him, aside from being stunned, I was thinking 'I wish I had a camera
handy....'  I LOVE my digital camera and take quite a lot of pictures...  My
camera is practically attached to my hip.  I've been making a conscious effort
to put the toilet lid down, but sometimes I forget.  If I ever catch him using
my potty again, I must take a shot just so people believe me!!!

My cats used to use the toilet (not spontaneously - I trained them),
and never fell in.  I wouldn't worry about it.

Is it difficult to train a cat to do this?  Did your kitties use the toilet
exclusively?  Just curious!

Hi! Long time no see. We had a cat that learned on his own just like that.
No one believed my brother either until we each saw him do it.
Unfortunately, Patches had leukemia and died a short time later from anemia.
However, we were always very proud of him for figuring it out. My mom has a
cat now I think is a prime learner for this. To use the box, he uses his
monkey toes to perch on the side of the box so that no part of him has a
chance of "touching that sand". That's just how he is. I will not be
surprised if he too, figures out the human waterbox.

Hi Karen...

I've noticed that Gustav pees while standing in the box, on the litter, but he
always poops while balancing on all of his toes on the box.  That is not
consistent with him peeing into the human toilet...  I can't explain this
magnificent, goofball cat.

Sorry about Patches.  :(  I can see why you guys were proud of him.  I'm proud
of Gustav, too...  He seems to have a lot of insight.  Cats truly are
incredible creatures....
There's no such thing as "just a cat!"

Take Care,
Kaare

I'd buy him a child's potty chair and put some water or litter in it.
Set it near the toilet.  heehee

Loved your story.  Really amazing.  Never had one of mine do that but I try
to keep the lid down.  However, I wouldn't mind giving the cats one of the
bathrooms.  Occasional flushing would be a lot easier than coping with
litter!

Hi Jen,

Cute pix. My four are all tigers too. One of them has a long muzzle like
Gustav, and one of them has a short muzzle like Aurora.

I love Gustav's ear tufts. I used to have a tiger with more pronounced ear
tufts than Gustav's. None of my current cats have ear tufts.

Hi - yep, I remember, & when you found Aurora, the porch kitten.

Wow!  Holy crow!  Etc., etc.  That's a *good* one, & really quite amazing,
IMO.  Nope, none of my cats (nor any that I personally know) have shown
interest in the toilet other than liking to watch it flush.   If they've
figured out what it's actually for, they haven't let on. ;-)

Mine seem to have decided that whatever it is, they *must* be there

My former feral, Sebbie, knows that when I'm perched on the john I'm a
captive non-threatening audience, so he'll push the door open and trot on
in to get his pets.  :-)  His brother, Benjie, generally is hot on his
heels, determined that if Sebbie gets some sugar, he's gonna get his, too!

Their sister, Caley, generally ignores me on the john except in the
morning, when she'll sometimes walk from the sink over to my shoulders and
settle there, next to my right ear, rubbing her face against my
cheek and purring her little heart out.

LOL! Cheeky may be lukewarm at times, but when I am

A. on the toilet or
B. talking on the phone

she just cannot leave me alone!

Hi Cathy...

It's nice to say hello to you...  :)  We always had cats while I was growing up
and I've known many kitties as well, and have not known another cat to do this.
It's crazy....

How are your furballs?

Hey, Kaare.  I honestly was just thinking about you and Gustav and Rori the
other day.  How cool.  My cat Scottie, who was a stray in my neighborhood along
with his littermates, has a biological brother named Jack who went to live with
someone else, and Jack did this also.  This woman who is his mom said she was
standing in the bathroom combing her hair one day and he hopped up on the
toilet, squatted, and did his business.  He continued to do it from time to
time.  I'm not in contact with her anymore as she moved but I thought that was
pretty cool.  I'll have to check out your pics.

Hi Candace!!!

Thanks for thinking of us...  :)  I read this board pretty faithfully actually,
but I'm just quiet.  It's great to check in and say hello from time to time.
There are so many wonderful, knowledgeable  people who post here.  You are
included in that of course!  I'm FOREVER grateful to so many here who offered
support and wisdom when Aurora found me and I had not a clue about taking care
of her!!!

Regards,
Kaare

LOL

I never had a cat do that, but when Gideon was young, he used to pull down
a length of toilet paper after using the litterbox, probably because he
saw people doing it.  This wasn't a kitten unrolling the roll just to
play, he used to pull a length of about 2 feet off the roll, whenever
he used the box.

That's pretty cute.  They do try to mimic us sometimes, I think.  What did he
do with the paper after he tore it off?

He just left it on the bathroom floor next to the litterbox.
